Default Rush Orders?
Ok, so I am trying to write my contract and not sure how to word my "Rush Order" info. I want it to be based on my schedule and availability but them to know there may be a charge.
How do you all handle this?

Thanks, Kirsten

Personally I do not do rush orders. But, I do understand a lot of VA's will accept rush jobs. I will be interested in know what others do in this situation as well.

What I have been reading from other VAs is they charge anywhere between 10-25% extra. But I am just trying to figure out how this is worded and how much etc

I'm thinkng 25% isn't that much to add on if it means dropping everything to fit something in immediately. I work from a project list and it would require pushing other projects back or else I have to make up the time to prevent that (more likely)--I've heard some VA don't even take rush orders. Have you heard that?

I would not charge extra for the occasional rush from an established and reliable client, however I feel an additional fee for rush should be on your website and policies to deter those for whom everything is a rush, no matter what time of day or night. People make an appointment with their mechanic, doctor, dentist, lawyer, never expecting or receriving instant service. Why should a professional VA be any different?

Lynne,
Yes this is very well put and a great example! So here is my dilemna...for regular clients, I don't have a problem doing something once in awhile on a "rush" basis. But how do I word this on my contract/website/information, so that those that would use rush ALL the time know there is a charge but my regulars know to come to me? I guess I don't want someone sitting there thinking "well I can't call her because she is gonna charge me an extra X amount"
Any suggestions?

Thanks again
Kirsten

This is a great research project for you. Visit the VA sites that are on here and take a look at their Terms & Policy pages. Winston has a really great one for example.

It's probably a grey area. I suspect most who look at a website just look at what you can do and what your rate is before contacting you. Perhaps it's just a question of getting to know the client - figuring out who is really up against the wall (and for those clients I pull out all the stops, day or night) and who has been sitting on the fence pondering their navel for a couple of days and routinely has a "rush" at 10 p.m. If you don't return voicemail or email after a certain time of day the latter may (if you're lucky) go elsewhere before you explode and bounce off the walls. The feeling of being used/abused and the resulting stress on you just isn't worth it.
