Default Payment in full
I am just wondering...do any of you demand payment in full for hourly clients prior to release of final project/document? Meaning a deposit at project start and balance due upon completion but....before releasing final document?

For me it would depend on the project, the total cost and what your terms were prior to starting. Did you have a contract or terms signed? Did you yourself incur any expenses other than your time on the project? I wouldn't say I would DEMAND payment, but I would have the terms in a contract. If you've already started the project and don't have a signed contract, it's awkward going back. I do see some VA's ask for 1/2 down as a deposit. I don't do this on hourly clients, but if it was for a website (which I don't do), but as an example I would collect a deposit. Good luck!

I do this if it's someone that is only asking at this point for a "one time project." If it's a big project, I'll ask for 50% upfront, remainder due prior to returning the final project. If it's little, I'll just get the entire amount before turning over the work. If it's an ongoing hourly client, I usually just bill them weekly or bi-weekly depending on the amount of work being done. If they aren't on retainer, I try to keep outstanding monies to a minimum. But, that's my personal preference.
