You all are reading my mind, again. I was also planning on using PayPal invoicing, but when I got into it yesterday, I realized I was going to need another option. Thanks for the advice on Freshbooks. I will start researching right away.

Actually, once I started having paying customers (yay!) I just settled with PayPal's invoicing. I think it's working great. I guess the main thing is that it's easy for client's to click the pay now button.

The only downside to PayPal or Google Checkout is the 2.9% processing fee plus $0.30 fee for each invoice. Does anyone try to pass that fee onto their clients? Just curious ... I'm new to this whole thing and trying to learn the best practices and procedures.

I thought of passing the charge on, but actually decided against it. I figure giving people the option to pay via PayPal is in my best interests as it's quick for people to use and I get paid quicker.

Those charges are a tax deduction for most businesses (check with your local tax laws) and it's just something to consider in your pricing and something to absorb. The issue comes, if you have an invoice for $100 and you pass on the 2.9% you'd be charging them 102.90, but then you are paying 2.9% on the 2.90 you just added, just becomes a crazy cycle.

2.9% really isn't that bad when it comes to accepting credit cards, so for me it's just a business expense that I absorb for the convenience I can offer my clients and I know I can get paid quickly. I think the longest it has taken a client to pay recently has been 4 days and that's simply because they were away for the weekend! LOL!

Congratulations on your new clients!

I'm glad you're happy with your decision. But you might want to take a look at Freshbooks anyway. Paypal charges you a 2.9% fee for each transaction. As your invoices grow, you'll start to feel the "ouch!" of those fees. When you invoice with Freshbooks you pay a flat fee of 50 cents which really makes my bank account happy.

I use Quickbooks for everything business related, as it also has a great time tracking system included. I also use Square so that I can accept credit cards and do it straight from my smartphone. But, I also accept company checks, which most of my clients give me.
