A prospective client has 4500 items to be entered onto her system via a remote program ands wants to know what I charge 'per record' and per record for 'updates.'

Does anyone charge a 'per record' rate?

I did quote one client a 'per record' rate to copy 1500 contacts from Word to Excel with basic formatting to total the number of records and a reduced 'update' rate, but that was a simple 'copy 'n paste' job.

Be careful of quoting on "piece work" and if you do, be clear in your quote. I did a mailing list for someone last year and when she got my bill, she called saying that I had quoted on 3,000 names and based on the number of entries (1,600) my bill seemed high. I re-sent her the quote I provided and indicated that it was based on 2,000 names and that I actually came in less than the quote considering the extra information she added to the project. I won't quote on piece work again.
