Default As a business owner
If you could give one piece of advice about being a BUSINESS OWNER to those just beginning what would it be?

I would say have a good bookkeeping system and accountant in place but that may just be the financial side of me.

I agree with you totally, good bookkeeping and a good accountant is at the top of my list together with putting together a really decent business plan which should be a living document that you carry along with you and change throughout your businesses life.

The act of writing about your business really makes you focus and helps you make decisions and even find new directions to go in. IMHO it is very important to be a reflective practionioner.

I would take that further.. develop a TEAM... bookkeeper, lawyer, marketing person (if you can afford it), designer.

Understand that you can't do it by yourself and recognize when you need help.

Write down your goals and put them somewhere you see them every day. If you have something in writing staring you back in the face, you are more likely to do it.

Schedule set times to accomplish your marketing, bookkeeping, annual review of costs, etc. Reviewing the annual costs to do business is important, especially if you live in a rural area where access to features change and this may be a cost savings in the end for you. Don't get lax in that department or you will cost yourself a lot of money.

Do nothing until you read, read, read!

Go to the library and get several books on operating and marketing a small business.

Read about changing your perspective from employee to business owner!

Read about the market, media, advertising rates, social organizations, and rates.

Read!

My one piece of advice: Ask yourself, do you want this more than anything you have ever wanted in your entire life? If not, do not go into business. Find something else that you are passionate about. There will always be challenges along the way, no matter how carefully you make your business plan. If you don't have passion for your endeavor, you won't make it through the rough patches, you'll quit.

Remember - you are a business owner NOT an employee!

Learn to MENTALLY separate your business finances from your personal finances. What makes sense for your business may not be the same for the personal side of things and vice versa.
