Some of the posts I have read here indicate that it is not necessary to have a fax machine. You can use online fax services. But don't the clients then have to scan documents to be able to send them online?

How does this work?

I have used efax in the past. The client just sends a fax to the number you get from efax just like they send to anyother fax number. You then get an email stating you have a fax and you can log into your account and view it. I haven't used it in a few years so it might have changed slightly.

I use a free service called k7.net. Basically your clients send the fax as they normally would and they send you an email letting you know that you have a fax.

I use efax.com and it works great. Right now I only have the free version. With the free version you get a fax number (non-local) and people send their faxes to the number and you get it in your email. The free version does not allow you to send faxes. If you need to send faxes then you would need the scanner, not the client, and you would have to pay a monthly fee. It's not much though. I will probably be upgrading my efax service soon.

Faxzero will let you send two free faxes a day up to three pages. Your document just needs to be a scanned in such as PDF file and then you can send it directly to someone else's fax machine.

If you need a signature on a document, there's also EchoSign that creates a PDF. Once each party e-signs the document, you each get a PDF of it. It's all done online through email and there's a free account for up to 5 signatures a month. Now that we're using this and eFax, our paperwork is almost non-existent.

EchoSign is great. You have the option for an "electronic" signature or they can print and sign and EchoSign gives them a fax number to use which then just sends you a PDF copy.

I agree with Sue that it's a great way to stay paperless.

I use srfax.com and would not ever go back to a fax machine. I do have a scanner for scanning in original documents, but have not needed it for the last year. The best thing is I can check my faxes from anywhere in the world so even when I am away from the office I can check my faxes. I can also type an email and send it to a fax machine.
