Default Leave Outlook for Good, Embrace Gmail - Redhead VA's Biz Bits
At the beginning of the year I made the decision to move from using Outlook (back story I have used both Outlook and Thunderbird, but always ended up back with Outlook) to using Gmail exclusively. Now I will not go back to a stand alone system on my hard drive. I love the idea that no matter where I’m at, I can access my email as long as I can find an internet cafe.

So why do I find Gmail so useful? It’s fast, it has great SPAM control, the filters are awesome, the search feature is incredible and the label feature...Click here to read the rest of this post at Redhead VA's Biz Bits.

I have to admit I have had mixed feelings about cloud-based business operations, email included - but this blog post has definitely got me thinking more about it.

I love the list of features you mentioned here and can see how useful they would be.

I'm just wondering how much work is involved in moving multiple email accounts over - and then, what to do with all of the old emails I've stored in my current email client and use on a regular basis?

Hi Tess,
I'm actually considering moving all of mine into gmail as well (not counting client email accounts, I have 12!)

Found this post on Google Answers board

Quote:
At "GMail Utilities" I found the following software:
"Google GMail Loader (GML)" by Mark Lyon, this is an import utility
that will import your mail from an existing mail program that utilizes
the mbox or maildir format. Typical programs that utilize the mbox
format are Netscape, Mozilla, Pocomail, etc.
The GML page address is:

Follow the links for download:

instructions,

Here is another tool:
"gExodus - a graphical Gmail import tool":

Remember that you can convert Outlook Express and Outlook emails into
the mbox format by importing them into Mozilla Mail/News or Mozilla
Thunderbird.

I'm so glad I moved to Gmail, it's my only email service now and if you still want to be attached to a desktop service you can using IMAP or POP service.

To migrate your email from your current desktop service you can use the process provided by Janine, but what I did was set up my desktop client using IMAP and had Gmail sync with the account.

I know recently GMail has now provided an option to only sync certain labels(folders) through IMAP.

Janiene - I also have client emails sent to my account, not as many as you but what I do is have them forwarded to my main account and then set up Gmail to give me the options to "send from" the client email.

I also love GMail and have several accounts. A general business to capture things like newsletters I signed up to, stuff from LinkedIn and FB. One for my bookkeeping discussion forum. A personal one for my joke list with friends. Another one for Gmail alerts.

I especially like the way they thread conversations together. Much better than MSN or Yahoo IMO.

Our webmaster is strongly recommending that we switch over to gmail as well - the number one reason is spam filtering.
