Default Is a fax machine a requirement?
Silly question, but I don't have a fax. I have used a free service a few times that I can access through the web, but it only lets you send a couple of pages about 2 times a day. Is there another option I could look into. I saw something about this on skype but it looked like I would need a fax machine to fax.

I ask this because I know technology is so fast there is probably something out there that I am not seeing. I can probably find a fax machine if required, but prefer email (since I do have a scanner on my printer....God I love technology!) and it is already paid for (through the internet service provider that I pay monthly).

Any thoughts?

....off to work...

Hi Brandy

A fax machine is not a requirement there are a lot of VA's that use fax services. A couple of options you might look into would be efax or myfax.

I too would have said myfax. I think the cost is excellent considering, you don't have to have a fax machine or a seperate phone line to cover long distance expense and be available for the fax machine.

Hi Brandy,

I have a fax machine and I've used it only 4 times since 2005. Most of my client work doesn't require much faxing. I'd consider e-faxing services if I were you.

efax.com has worked great for me. I can also get the faxes anywhere and this is important since I'm still dual career.

Hi Everyone,

I currently use myfax. It works for me. You can also use services like gotvmail.com and ringcentral.com they both have fax services also (However, most of the time it is the same number for you clients). I don't have a fax machine, but i would sugget getting one unless you have a scanner. I got rid of mines and now getting one this week. I will only used it to send out faxes if need be, but will be getting a print, fax, copy system.

Good luck!!

I think it just depends on the services you provide and the clients you get, whether or not you need a fax machine. I do bookkeeping which involves dealing with a lot of paper, receipts, etc. so I do use my fax machine some.

I have an all-in-one machine but I also use MyFax. I prefer to receive faxes that way so I can get them anywhere, plus I receive them in PDF so I can just save the files to my computer.

I would recommend using an online fax service to start out with and wait on purchasing a fax machine until you see if you actually need one or not. If you did get one, I would get an all-in-one with a scanner and everything. A fax machine by itself just wastes space.

Thank you ladies for the great leads.

I currently have a printer/scanner/copier, so I think I will hold off on the purchase of a fax machine for now and just use one of the services online. For those of you who do low volumes of faxing, I have found that faxzero works great. But that is really only good for low volume faxing and it is only a "fax out" service. I will let you know if I find any other services/software out there that can assist.

Thanks,
~Brandy

Hello..

I have a 6 in 1 that includes a manual and a PC fax.. I use it constantly.. When I am not using it, I use my scanner to E-mail the documentation to my clients.. Every VA has their own way of getting correspondence to their clients - for me I think a fax machine is a very vital piece of equipment for my business..

I have a fax program on my computer. As long as the 'puter is turned on, the fax 'signal' automatically answers the phone. Otherwise, the answering machine picks up. (I don't answer my phone unless caller id shows someone I want to talk to...)

It's not a requirement, but it helps. I use My Fax for incoming faxes and have a cheap fax machine for sending.

I use fax.com and I really like it. I just started my business and found nice to be able to fax from my email and recieve faxes to my email.

Or I can use the online fax console. The services is only $9.99 per month, I have already used it about 6 times since starting in late April. I like for "Cold" leads when only a fax number is available.

One other feature is that I can add attachments which are converted to fax mode.

I was looking to into fax services myself and I have always used efax or rightfax at my prior jobs. It's awesome because the faxes come in as a PDF to your email. If you are blackberry dependent, this enables you to see fax as soon as it comes in. Also i have found that when you get a four in one printer/copier/scanner/faxer the fax feature is the first to go and your machine never works the same afterwards.
