You can turn off the ability for people to send you unsolicited garbage on skype. The privacy controls vary depending on whether you have a free account or a paid account. I had Skype on my old computer and never actually used it but, for various reasons, I just installed it on my new computer tonight. I now constantly keep getting popups in IE that skypenames.exe wants to open. I'm seriously considering uninstalling it because it's driving me crazy!

I have gotten a few lately and just block them however my privacy settings are pretty tight. For those who are thinking of using Skype, this is how I communicate with several of my clients so you may want to try it and get familiar. I use Firefox browser. But I don't think that really matters. You can go into your settings and check off 'don't allow people to contact you that aren't in your contact list'. .
