Overkill
I think it was Seth Goodin I was listening to in the car one time and he was talking about permission marketing. He went into detail about how you can kill it and he pointed out ways other companies had successfully killed their own permission marketing. At the time I found it interesting and hadn't personally experienced it. Permission marketing being killed is NOT the same as out growing a source. I've signed up for something and months later descided it just wasn't for me..that isn't the same. Killing permission marketing is when you over market to someone who has given you permission to market to them...signing up for free things often means you have to suffer through whatever else you might get, mainly emails. I've found this usually turns out pretty good - I sign up for something specific and all the extras aren't so bad either, until recently.

Just yesterday someone killed the permission marketing I'd given them and I removed my name from their database - thank goodness for that feature! It was to the point I was getting something three or more days a WEEK and sometimes MORE THAN ONE THING on those days! Give me a break! That isn't permission marketing - it was a pain in my behind! Yesterday, on another two email day, I'd had enough!

I'm sure you know the kind of emails I'm talking about! One great paragraph in a three scroller (you know, roll that wheel three times to see the end?) and the remaining text is one big advertisement for whatever they are trying to peddle.

So now I'm wondering if I'm the only one! Have you ever retracted your permission marketing from someone who killed it?

Oh yeah, loads of times. But that's why I have a separate email box. I sign up for stuff with that and, if they don't blast me with 1001 emails, i'll move it over to my regular email account.

Some people seem to not realize that there is, in fact, such a thing as too much. They're the same people who have 5000 ads on their blog/website...

I get this alot! I especially get it from Facebook groups. Often times I'll join a Facebook group and then I get spammed daily with stuff I'm not interested in. I've also been experiencing the daily spamming from those whose newsletters I've subscribed to. They aren't necessarily sending me newsletters but other stuff I don't care about. So, I've been spending too much time unsubscribing from stuff lately.

I have been TRYING to retract my permission marketing from a company called Stocking Girl for MONTHS. I purchased some tights from them a year ago and they have sent me up to three emails a week ever since. I tried to unsub after about three months, tried even calling them numerous times and spoke to their 'customer service' about the issue and they STILL send me emails. Not only have they lost me as a customer but I've set their emails to go to the garbage bin upon arrival AND I've reported them to the FCC and any other spam list I can get my hands on.

It's pretty serious business when you actually start to resent a company for their intrusive and illegal use of your pesonal email address...

Some companies definitely take advantage of of you when you give them permission. I've been asked to be removed from many lists - sometimes going as far as contacting their ISP because they wouldn't remove me. They don't realize how much they are hurting their business when they hound their customers or target market. I've told a bunch of people about my bad experience with certain companies.

There is nothing so irritating as giving someone permission to market to you and then get bombarded repeatedly with repeated emails. I, too, have been a victim of this and I find it more prevalent with smaller companies. Perhaps they think they need more of themselves out there in order to make an impact, not realizing it usually has the opposite effect!

Oh most definitely. I have signed up for things that promised at the beginning they would provide tips and all kinds of helpful information through newsletters, only to find that most of the emails I receive are trying to sell me something. I agree that the business owners are only doing themselves a disservice - especially since once I do receive those sales emails, I unsubscribe and don't give them a second chance to send me the emails they told me I would be receiving in the first place. I'm very wary to subscribe to anything anymore because it gets old to keep having to unsubscribe!

I hate to admit it but I believe my real estate client is killing their permission marketing. They have a site where you must provide a name and email to proceed to receive more information. Since they implemented this new system they have gotten more valid sign ups BUT they've also inundated their cutomers with a daily email with some real estate tip or just asking how things are going. I am not sure how many sign up per day but I do know we get at least 1-3 unsubscribes a day. Because I am also on their list I see these emails and the number of people asking to be removed. I hope its working in their favor but it would really turn me off if I were a real potential client.

I have a client who used to do this all the time. She has now pulled it back to twice a week - one is her weekly newsletter, the other a promotion about a product or workshop. She always gets unsubscribes, probably a good 10 or 12 a week, but she gets between 20 and 30 signups a week and her list is 5,000+ strong so I don't think she worries.

Personally I stick with a monthly newsletter for mine and if any of my readers want more, they sign up to one or more of my blogs. I do have a few 'fans' out there who enjoy my writing

So how much is too much? I'm starting a newsletter and am launching a few new service offerings. So I'm thinking a monthly newsletter and one or two service announcements per month, depending on industry. Is this too much? These are all warm contacts obtained from networking.
