Default How much time does a newsletter take?
I have a potential client who just contacted me regarding managing their newsletter. They just signed up for Constant Contact and they currently have a distribution of about 3,000 subscribers. I have done newsletters in the past but they have been very simple Word documents that we have made up. Assuming I can get the hang of CC pretty easily and we get the format and the contact database moved into there, how much time does it take each month to insert the new material and get it sent out? Roughly, in your experience? 1 hour, 5, 10? Can anybody offer any guidelines? Thanks!

Kathy

All of the sudden things are happening. I hung up the phone from this guy an hour ago and checked my emails and there was a request for a meeting with a local non-profit that knows about me. I knew this could happen and am so excited to see it start!

And I am so excited for you! I can't wait to get those kinds of results myself. One thing you will want to make sure you do is ask how they heard about you so that you will know which marketing methods are worth your time.

Linkedin for the newsletter and ex-co-worker for the non-profit. This is the 4th or 5th person that has contacted me through Linkedin so I highly recommend it!

Kathy - An average newsletter, I would say, once setup and standardized, can be updated in an hour. Note, though, the widely varying definitions of 'average' that are possible. Also, will there be many monthly changes to the contact lists. And how much re-formatting of images will you need to do. So there are variables, for sure. But overall, it's a very quick thing, once the template is under control.

And, I agree, LinkedIn is the cat's meow.

I have to agree, approximately 1 hour on average for inputting data into the next edition, but including the set up and other tasks for managing the system I'd give an average of may 3 hours per month to manage. Once of course you get the hang of things.

I would concur that if you have properly edited text with good images and the formatting details have been agreed upon in advance that it would take about 1-1.5 hours to complete a newsletter. However, in the years I have been servicing newsletter clients, I really have not worked with a client who has sent me everything I needed; on time. Most newsletters I've worked on require moderate to extensive editing as I typically receive a 'raw' copy which needs to be edited. I don't know why that is but I don't mind because it is what I enjoy doing the most!

If your client sends you reasonably well-written documents, with little work-through on images, links, headers, subheaders, general formatting, keywords and so on, then 1 hour or so would be a good estimate of time.

Constant Contact is straight-forward and easy to use. I would suggest viewing the tutorials before you commit just so you are ahead of the learning curve.

Good luck!

Janine

There is always a learning curve. Once that is past then it becomes pretty automatic in your mind to do updates. From experience it's usuallyanything up to an hour or hour and a half - really depends on how much content there is.
