Default Work Turn Around Time
Hi, I am making up a FAQ list. I am wondering what the normal turn around time is for client work.
When a client asks you "how long will it take", what would be a good response to that? This was a post on another forum where one VA said her turn around time was 24 hours for 2 hours of work. What if it was 4 hours or 6 or more?
What would be a reasonable turn around time for both client and VA?
Would appreciate any feedback....
Thanks

Jo-Carole,

I think it would depend on the job, how many other projects you have waiting and what is on your schedule. My normal turn time is 24 hours for small projects and 48 hours for larger ones. However, most of my clients are retainer with on-going tasks that I work on throughout the month.

I believe my contract says 24-48 hours for *most* projects AND that I require at least 3 days advance notice about the project. This allows me to make sure it fits in with the rest of my workload and it also means that the client needs to plan ahead to let me know about their projects.

This is helpful for being able to plan your work week or work day. You want to avoid a client contacting you one day and expecting a 24-48 hour turnaround when you already have other projects to work on or that are due for clients who planned ahead.

I tell my clients the same as most everyone else. I give an average of 24-48 hours turn around, but I also tell them that it depends on a number of factors.

Thanks so much Kimberly for this advice, it makes a lot of sense. I always try to be prepared in advance as much as possible to plan whatever I am working on. I have my days planned out and wouldn't want anyone to drop something on me without any advance notice expecting it to be completed when I already have other things that I am working on. This helps.

Winston, sounds good to me, just trying to stay away from promising something that I can't make happen! Thanks

It usually takes me 24-48 hours depending on the project as well. However, I don't always say that directly to my clients or PC's.

When talking to a Potential client and they ask me this, I tell them (Like Winston) that it depends on the type of work to be done and other factors. If they ask how long it would take to do a certain project that I'm familiar with & done before, I'll say something like, "Well, the last time I did this it took aproximately 48 hours or so."

When an actual client asks for something, I always ask them, "When do you need this by?" and then let them know if that is a reasonable time or, if it's not, we come up with a deadline date together. I always make sure I say something to make sure the expectation is clear, such as: "Great. I'll have xyz over to you by Thursday, 3pm (or whatever day and time). That way the expectation is clear for the client and me. :-)
