Default Potential Clients
Hi Guys,

I'm just after a bit of advice please.

I have just taken on a new client which is great, and the job they would like me to do is contacting a list of potenial clients for them to arrange meeting is possible. This is all ok with me. I have signed a non diclosure which prevents me from offering the same or similar services as my clients which I am ok with because their business is completely different to theirs. My dilemma is as I am acting for my client is it ethical for me to tell them that I am a Virtual Assistant working freelance for my client and to offer my services to them also.

Please could I have your opinions on this as it could be potentialy really good for my bussiness as the contact list is extensive.

Many Thanks

Karen

Karen,
That would not be a good idea. That is the same as stealing the contact list to promote your own services which, most likely, falls under the NDA agreement you signed.
Most NDA's have wording such as: "privy to confidential information" which you are not allowed to share with anyone. That includes their contact list.

I know it's tempting but best not to start down that route. One of those contacts could go back to your client and express concern over your promoting your own business. Then, you not only lose that contact, you'll probably lose the client and anyone else they might have referred to you in the future.

I thought that might be the correct position but I thought it was worth asking as you never want to miss an opportunity.

As My clients services are so different from my own I might actually ask them how they would feel about me approaching the contact or if they would refer if me if at all possible.

Thanks for the advice. I will defenately not use the client list without permission

Karen

Hi ... It's tempting but against the agmt you signed ... Not only that it's not moral or ethical ... when you bypass your current employer for a probable protective employer (in your opinion) .. that person might not have a good opinion about you ... He / She might fear taking you for breach of trust and bait n switch ...

In one of previous offices ... when an agent used the list for his benefit ... he was dismissed from the work ... the other client whom he contacted gave the info for my company ... So he has lost trust with the present too !

Hope it helps .

Best Regards

I wouldn't have done anything without making sure first, but now I am definately not going to. I rather like the good reputation I'm building up so I am not going to do anything to spoil it.
Its great to hear other people's point of view though

Thanks

Karen,

It is certainly against the NDA and agreement that you have with your client, however it may not be a missed opportunity. I have a client that I do appointment confirms for and have gotten business from his clients. I did not promote myself and use his provided email for correspondence, although some of those seeking his services also inquired about his assistant. I was lucky enough that he is a great referrer and have picked up some business from this.
