Default A potential client called but...
I got an email from a lady who needed to replace her VA because she was leaving the field. She told me she would pay $10 an hour, for 10 hours a week. She wanted a resume and for me to fill out a questionnaire rating my abilities from 1-10.. (1 being not so good)

I wrote her back and gave her a quick run down of my rates with retainer discounts, etc. I also told her I would gladly send over a company portfolio. She wrote me back saying Thanks anyway.

I have been through this for the past 5 years and I am sticking to my guns now the same as I always have, regardless of what kind of business I am running. I would never presume to tell a plumber what I would pay them per hour. Why would I run my business any different than a plumber?

I guess this really isnt a question, I just needed to vent because I am SOOO tired of people trying to get anything they can for as little as they can. Its very frustrating!!

BUT on a good note! She saw my ad on Craigslist..... so Craigslist does attract people, just what kind of people, I dont know yet!

I also recently had a prospective client that said he saw my ad on Craigslist. So I agree completely: "Craigslist does attract people, just what kind of people, I don't know yet!"

Shelley - good for you!!! I believe you handled it very professionally, especially since she contacted you initially.

She may find someone willing to do the work for her price, but I wonder how happy she's going to be with the quality. Many people are looking to get as much as they can for the lowest cost possible, but that isn't who I want for a client.

You know...you all are encouraging me greatly. I did on-site bookkeeping and I charged $15/hr, but I am going virtual and definitely want to step my rates up to standard of at least $25/hr. I am so concerned about people looking at that rate and comparing it to what many companies pay many of their on-site bookkeepers and passing me by.

I know there's a thread on here somewhere with a calculator that you can post on your website that will show the savings a company will have if they use you versus an on site person. I can't think of where the thread is, but you can see an example of the calculator on my site. I know someone in here knows where the thread is.

Good for you Shelly, she sounds like a micomanager too! I laughed when I read she wants to pay you below rate and for you to give her a resume and rate yourself. Maybe you should send her some literature on what a VA actually is and does so she understands you are a business owner as well!

I half did that, I gave her a whole paragraph on what I HAVE TO PAY FOR MYSELF (making it really clear! ), letting her know that she doesnt have to cover any of the costs except my hourly rate... we all know that running a home office isnt free but obviously she doesnt get that... she thinks 10 an hour is good in this economy, but whittle that down after the basics are paid for, I would be making about $4 a hour! I would do better on Amazon mech turks...

Im hopeful because someone saw my ad! yeah!!

You just hit one of my pet peeves! A TRUE bookkeeper should be paid more than $15/hour, which IMHO is what you pay someone who just knows the software but doesn't have an accounting background. We aren't allowed to quote rates on the forum but I can tell you that my virtual bookkeeping rate is more than double $15 and I DO get clients who appreciate my background, experience, etc. and are more than willing to pay me what I ask. BTW - I make $>24/hr at my 9-5 and am due for a raise...

To give you an idea, a friend of mine who teaches (at a local college)
QB charges at least double that per hour people's homes for tutoring lessons. She does not do the work herself. HTH
