Default New Client upfront costs
Just wondering if anybody bills for new client upfront costs?

I am talking about making up new folders, printing out copies of stuff you need to know about your clients and you want permanent records of. Also the time involved in setting up any systems needed to be in place before you actually *start* on the actual work... I know you would charge if you are creating a database for your client, for initial setup. Would like to hear how you handle this? Thanks...

I'm trying a "new client package", I am giving 2 free hours to new clients that sign up for one of my packaged deals. I did this for one client so far and she appreciated it. I'm going to give it a try and see how it works. Interested in everyone else's takes...

I think that's a great idea. 2 hours free. But I'm going to have to think about it. I"m trying to find a balance between going overboard being nice to gain clients and keeping a professional attitude. Sounds pretty good though.

What are your packaged deals? What do they incude? Very interested!

I'll be the underdog here...I don't give out any time for free.

If the work is specific to the client's work, I bill for it. However, if the work is specific to me keeping administrative records straight so that I can do the job, such as making folders and so on, I do that work on my own time. I would consider the latter as simply the cost I bear for doing business and this is built into my rate.

I thought about charging a low cost set up fee for clients. That way the basics are covered.

What would you consider to be low cost?

A low cost set up fee would be $29.00 for administrative cost. Depending what all that you do to set up the clients account.

I do exactly the same. Unless of course I agree to work for free (which I do) to get the experience I need for which I feel I cannot charge. But otherwise, everything gets billed, incl. 0,15ct phonecalls + the time spent on those, even if it is with the client.

I offer a free hour or two, but I do not publish that anywhere. I offer during or after the 30 minute consultation. I also charge a $45 one-time set up fee. That covers any administrative work that goes into getting the client set up and ready to recieve services, creating folders and doing research prior to starting a project. I usually go above and beyond, so when I offer 1 hour, it more than likely becomes 2.5 hours free. So I don't feel the $45 is too high.

I have been giving a free 1 hour consult, which would include discussing their website and online marketing needs. But, I have had a problem with people taking advantage of this and just getting info from me. I need to make a change.
