Default Need Some Advice
Happy New Year everyone!

I replied to an RFP to help advertise a website. Client is looking to keep costs to a minimum. Over the holiday I researched various free sites for advertising a website. When I tried using clients email on a site I replied email is already in use. I asked for clients log in information for the sites they have the website listed on. I also asked for Twitter and Facebook information so I can tweet about the site and update Facebook status pertaining to the site as well. Client does not want me to have his log in information as I would have access to personal information. Now, I'm confused. If client already has website listed on sites and does not want me to use their Twitter and FB accounts to help spread the word, then what should I be doing to help client advertise website? I am confused. Any advice is appreciated!

Thanks,
Beth

Beth, there are a few issues with what happened.

First as Admin Experts, we are trusted individuals. A client should trust you if they are going to do business with you. There are ways around sharing passwords such as using Lastpass ( it has an option to grant you access to an encrypted password that you can't see so you can still login ).

It could be that the relationship is too new but most good clients would find a workaround and start off with trust rather than with skepticism. Wondering where you found this client? That may make a difference as well. or perhaps they had a bad experience in the past.

Trust is huge.

Beth,

You will need to access the client's personal information and you will need to explain this to the client in order to do the job you have been contracted to achieve success.

Dani is correct...the trust issue is huge for a client and apparently this individual will need some assistance in realizing that in order for you to do the job, he will need to trust you.

Do you have a confidentiality clause in your contract? If so, point that out to the client and that you will never betray that trust.

Do you offer a disclosure in your contract as well? Again, point this to out to your client that you do.

If the client will not give you the log on information you need and cannot trust you, I feel that you have two choices:

**Explain that you cannot do the job effectively and will terminate the contract

**Redo the contract to list projects you can do which do not require log on information. If he goes this route, you can spend time building trust so that eventually he may turn over his log on information.

Note: It is important to understand that you really only want to work with people who will trust you. If he is showing signs that he cannot trust you now, this may be a Red Flag that something else may occur down the road. He may question your billing or he may micromanage your work. So consider if this client is really worth the problems that may occur later.

Best of luck with whatever you decide.

Janine

Thanks for the advice ladies. Yes, I do have a confidentiality clause in my contracts. I will mention this to the client today and send information on Lastpass. The RFP was posted on a site I trust and I'm hoping this works out. If it proves to be to difficult I will cut my losses.

Beth,

Great advice you have been given so far. I use LastPass and recommend to my clients who are skiddish about forwarding pass codes. As far as Facebook, if it is a page then they can make you the admin or better yet they can set up a Hootsuite account and link their networks then they only have to give you access to that.
