Default My first client
I stumbled upon my first client who is in need of an independent contractor. She needs me to sign a confidentiality agreement and a 1099. I am so new to this, do I need to have them sign anything? Should I fill out a 1099 right away or wait until I'm sure it really is legit?

Becky,

First off, you should be having her sign a contract. If she insists on using her confidentiality agreement, make sure that it meshes with yours. I usually inform my clients that I do have a confidentiality clause built into mine but can add an addendum for their proprietary information.

As for the 1099, have you gotten an EIN from the IRS? If not I suggest you do this right away. Go to IRS.gov and apply online (free to do). It only takes minutes and this is a great way to protect your social security number.

Once you have the signed contract and information all worked out send her your W-9. I do send a W-9 to all my clients requesting that they give me a 1099 at year end for my records. However, they are not required if you are paid under $600, so be sure to keep accurate records of your income for end of the year tax time.

Thank you so much. No, I haven't gotten an EIN yet but I certainly will get that done right away. Handing out my social security number is the part that bothers me the most. Your advice is very helpful, again, thank you so much.

You need to download the free getting stated as a VA packet on this forum. You can find this packet at: Download your free GETTING STARTED AS A VIRTUAL ASSISTANT packet. The packet contains lots of useful information, including contract samples.

(Thanks Tess for the providing the packet.)

Best of Luck,
Julie

Thank you Julie. I downloaded alot of forms, I'm just not sure exactly what all I do have as I haven't had a chance to completely get myself organized. I just kind of stumbled upon this potential client. I wasn't quite ready yet but at the same time, I didn't want to pass up on the opportunity.
