Please let us know how your meeting went - I would agree with all posts that a resume is not the right way to go, maybe a portfolio covering the industries and roles you have held in the past would be an idea, no specifics, no previous employee names and addresses but details such as job title, industry and specific responsibilities wouldn't do any harm I don't think - sometimes you need to gauge the client too - some will need to see something like that and some won't so it's a bit of a guessing game.
Best of luck
Lara

Hello everybody,

What would you do for a telephone interview with a potential new client? I have one scheduled for tomorrow, and I'm not sure what to expect. He will be my first client if we come to an agreement. He saw my profile on LinkedIn and sent me an email. I have reviewed his website, what else should I do?

Thanks,
Patricia

You need to ask questions about what he wants done, what kind of timeframe, if there is specific software he uses (depending on what he wants done), and so on. As much information as possible so you can make a decision about what you would charge and if you can meet the timing required. As he is your first client perhaps have some case studies on types of work you've done in the past that is similar to what he wants done. Try to keep away from the employee mentality - you're the service provider and he needs your service. Good luck!

Thank you. He has already given me a brief couple of paragraphs about what he needs, some social media, some spreadsheets, some qc stuff and some other admin stuff. Hopefully I will get the first assignment and not have any problems doing it. I know I have the skills to do what he needs to have done but there is definitely going to be a learning curve.
Thanks again,

I have always found that a needs assessment is the best place to start. I always meet with a client either virtually or in person and ask them about themselves, their business and what they feel their needs are. When they get talking about their business you will be able to determine what their needs are. I haven't been a member long but, I am sure there is probably a form within the forum that would assist with this step. After working with a client for some time, I always review their initial needs assessment. At this point you have an inside view and can really help your client to determine where his and your time are best spent.
