I have been looking into freelance sites as well and strongly considering joining in order to get my feet wet but in reading all the feedback on freelance sites, I am thinking it twice.

Thanks for this awesome feedback.

Ivette

"The biggest thing is realizing that marketing/networking is a 24/7 activity and needs constant care. "

This is the key, for sure.

Great response, Stephanie.

Still, it's hard to find a balance between tweaking and testing marketing strategies, on one hand, while sticking long enough with them to give them a chance to work. Know what I mean? CJ Hayden says to pick a few marketing venues and work them long and faithfully; and not to flit from one channel to another.

What do you think?

I agree with you completely, Mary. Some things take time to work and you should give those things a chance before you mess with it. I guess the point I was trying to make is that it's a good idea to really pay attention to your marketing efforts and review them on a regular basis over time to get a feel for how they've been working for you, how you feel about using that particular marketing tool and maybe try to figure out why you feel that way (i.e. some people don't like Twitter and some people live by it), is there anything you could be doing better than what you are? That sort of thing. Basically, give it a chance to work and if, over time, you're not getting the results you like, try to figure out why and brainstorm ways to "fix" it.

I have a friend who is in sales and he keeps a journal where he records his thoughts and feelings whenever he meets with a potential client. It helps him to "tweak" how he interacts with his clients and how he presents his material to them. If something goes well, he takes a look at what he thinks went well. If it doesn't, he takes a look and tries to come up with ways that he can improve. I think that's where I came up with my idea.

Hi Stephanie

You have provided sound advice. I used to read about business and marketing plans on this forum roughly a year ago and thought 'yeah right' now that I have completed mine I feel that the effort was worth it and I have learnt a lot from it. Your terms alone indicate you do as well. It is very important to learn about marketing and what your business is and find a way to make it work.

Good luck everyone, slow and steady wins the race usually.

Michele

Well, what I have learned here has much value. What I did first is cancel my elance account. The next is to have incentives for my referral program. Although I have thought a lot of beginning this business, I have cold feet.
By seeing how to get the first client, I see that I can do this. Thanks!
