Stephanie,

I don't even use the term 'virtual assistant' in my explanation. If you ask a question, such as 'Have you ever?' then this engages the other party and they are prompted to continue the conversation.

Thanks for your comments.

Janine

This was a great post! I have been looking for ways to answer the "Virtual Assistant" question that makes the person asking the questions think of ways my services can be of service to them. This will definitely help in quick explanations in networking settings.
Thank you!

Great job! I really enjoyed reading that and it gave me some ideas on how to 'phrase' my next response. Again, thanks.

Very good post, I had a boring ho-hum speech that i don't fell really captures the listener, I think I am going to have to beef that up a bit!

Super article Janine! I often find it difficult to explain to people what I do also.

Love your post Janine. I attend lots of networking events and every time I start explaining what I do, I know I've lost them as soon as I use the words, virtual assistant, work remotely... I will certainly give this a try. I'm sure it will prove to be successful. Thanks again!

That is so awesome Janine!
I'm so going to use this "Have You Ever" approach when people ask me what I do.
I usually tell them, "I look after Ezra" (my son), because I think they think being a VA isn't a "real" job.

PhillipaW,

Being a VA is entirely real. I think I told this story here on VAF once but I was on a consult call with a real estate broker (a really large brokerage firm in NYC) and he asked me, "Why did you decide to be a VA instead of taking a real job?"

Imagine that...the guy is discussing what I can do to help his business grow and I am making suggestions and giving him results of what I have done in the past and he asks me this absurd question.

I suppose his job wasn't 'real' because he was contracting with a VA.

I surely turned that job down...and he called me back 3 times.

Janine

Hey Janine,

Thanks for that confirmation.
I supposed most people think that it's only a 'real' job if you work in an office etc or are employed by someone else.
Being a VA is certainly a real job and I will be sure to be telling everyone from now on with no hesitation that I am a Virtual Assistant!

Wow, I feel a bit empowered now...

Phillipa
