elevator speech
I have my first networking event a week from tomorrow. The top thing on my list to get done between now and then is my elevator speech!

I know that since our skills are varied and our niches are different too what you use most likely use won't work for others. Regardless, there is something to be said for being a veteran! Anyone want to share experiences around your speech and what your favorite one is?

Make it a great day!

When telling people what I do as a VA, this is what I say...

"I take care of all the administrative tasks that keep you too busy to find new clients and make more money! Wouldn't it be great to have some extra time?" or something to that effect. Mine isn't very fancy. I tell it straight up!

When talking about graphic design, I just tell them that I draw pictures on my computer all day. Haha!

Sundi,

Congrats on signing up for a networking event! I know you'll be fantastic!

What I would do first is figure out exactly who your ideal client is. What type of business is it that you would like to work for, what type of client benefits you the most. After you give your introduction, I would mention what type of client you are looking for. You may also want to devote a sentence to what a virtual assistant is.

Hope this helps!

When asked what I do, I say something like "I'm a virtual assistant which means that anything that your office person does for you, I can do from my home office which can save you money." :aureola:

I was listening to a podcast by Robert Middleton a few weeks ago and he suggested that you begin by telling people who you work for and go from there. You only have 30 seconds at best so don't waste it telling them what a virtual assistant is but rather what jobs a virtual assistant does. This paints a picture in their mind. Then, if they're interested and ask for more information you can tell them what a virtual assistant is.

For instance, "I work from home as a virtual assistant for professional coaches. I handle their daily administrative tasks by sending out email newsletters, updating their websites, posting articles and teleclass information and basically anything else they don't like doing. They get more free time to build their business."

At one of our networking meetings we have to stand up and give our elevator speech at the beginning of each meeting, I say "I'm Rebecka Melson, owner of Virtual Business Services. I provide bookkeeping and administrative support to small business owners nationwide."

I always get snaggled around the 'specializing' bit. As an elevator speech, I say I offer administrative services to business & professionals. But maybe this is too general, and I could tag on that I specialize in writing & editing ... but seldom do cuz I'm afraid people will start to think of me more as a writer than general business support. Still, the elevator speech should be extremely specific within the short time. Six months in and I'm still trying to figure it out ....

Can someone tell me what actually goes on at networking events? I've been to tradeshows before and I imagine it would be something like that but is it for multi-industries/businesses and what exactly is expected of you?

Re: elevator speech
I used networking as a general descriptor for the entire event I'm attending. It is actually a LinkedIn event being hosted in my local area from 12 to 7 on a weekday and I'm going to take a half day of vacation and attend. I even have a client that said she would pay for half! The agenda says "Open Networking" from 5 to 7 so that is what I'm preparing for.

I think any given moment is a networking event. Some things I've been reading say you shouldn't look at it that way. I guess if you aren't trying to build a business you wouldn't have too; however, I am! :p

Since I haven't been to one I guess I'll be able to give you a better answer in one week! There are plenty of folks here who have been so I bet you get some good answers...If not, you might want to post your question again with a specific title. I'd say you are in the right spot on VAF for the question though1

Make it a great day!
