Default The Benefits of Business Networks
So many VAs set up business and then wonder what's next - where do the clients come from? My latest article at Flying Solo (great resource for all of you by the way) might help you discover more places to find clients.

I just received an invite from BNI and I was debating how many networks I should be joining. I do want to join the chamber of commerce soon. Right now I am taking advantage of the guest visits until I have some cash flow. I'm going to go to the guest meeting of my local BNI chapter in a couple weeks. Thanks for posting this Kathie.

Great article Kathie. I just decided to have a table in our local Chamber of Commerce Spring Fling Business Showcase. I'm excited and scared (out of my comfort zone) all at the same time. I'm now in the midst of planning on what to display, what to have on hand, etc. Any thoughts anyone?

A few thoughts: Brochures, business cards, promo giveaways, a colourful banner to attract attention and make you stand out, copies of your newsletter or a way to gain an opt-in mailing list

Should I give away an hour or two of my time for consultation? I was thinking that I could collect business cards and/or names and telephone numbers that way. I don't have a newsletter, but wanted to have candies or something on the table.

Do you mean spend an hour or two during the event for private consultations (a few minutes per person for a very basic consultation) or are you saying that you're going to give away free consultations? Most VAs, I think, offer free consultations anyhow.

If you were talking about actually giving them free time, I would think it might be a neat idea if you do a "business card raffle". Set a bowl out for everyone to put their business cards in and then pick one (or two). Whoever you pick gets maybe 3 or 4 hours of work out of you for FREE. That may help to bring at least one or two clients in and you'd have a whole bowl full of potential clients to add to your mailing/marketing list.

I went to a mortgage brokers tradeshow with a friend of mine and almost every table (banks and underwriters) set out a bowl for you to put your business cards in. I expanded on that idea from my Happy Hour days. Bars would set them out and would pick one card out per month for a free happy hour for your office (or group if you happened to work for a large corporation).
