I haven't personally attended a Meetup meeting, but I know there is a very active group here in my city that I am a member of. I am sure there are others that can chime in here with their experiences.
One great thing about this forum is the 'Search' function. A quick plug-in of the term 'Meetup' garnered a whole pile of results like this thread and this one.
I like meetup and belong to several groups in my area. If you can't find a business networking group in your area, take a look at some of the social groups that interest you. If you join one you'd be out there meeting people(networking) and enjoying yourself with something that interests you at the same time.
I belong to several small business networking groups and a social women's group.
I've gone to a few meet ups.. perhaps I need to vary the ones I go to. I haven't found much success with them.. Forgive me if this offends anyone, but I tend to find more serious clients at events that they pay for (no matter how small the amount).
I belong to a few meetup groups, some paid others free but none are for business. I find that I got alot of hits from my profile posted on the meetup sites so it does get some SEO. My sister sells candles and she is involved in 3 meetups in her area. She has gotten some good results from joining and has made friends resulting in sales.

I found a small business group that promotes through meet-up that I have gotten clients from. I have not attended BNI because I cannot adhere to the strick attendance policy they have. Check with you local chamber of commerce and see if there are any non-profits that could benefit from your service as well.
