Default From the west...
Hi everyone! I actually see a lot of east coast and NY users here, so hopefully my west coast welcome will be equally nice

I'm trying to make it in this field but have a lot of trouble sometimes making clients happy. When does a task fall outside the realm of virtual assistance? It's tough to tell, let me tell you...

Anyway glad to be here, I'm sure I'll be reading through the forums for hours...

Hi there, welcome to the forums (from the west coast )

To answer your question - I'd say the issue isn't so much if the task falls outside the realm of virtual assistance as if it falls outside the realm of what you choose to offer among your services. As a business owner, that's always totally up to you. A client can ask about a service but if you're not qualified to, or choose not to offer it, for whatever reason that's your prerogative (one of the great things about being an entrepreneur service provider! ) In order to keep your clients happy when it comes to tasks that you don't offer, it can help to have a network of VAs you trust who DO offer said service to pass the work along to.

Just my two cents

Looking forward to chatting with you futher!

Hello,

Tess made some good points. One great thing about being a business owner is that ONLY you can decide what services you WANT to provide. If the client wants some certain service that you don't feel comfortable doing or don't have the skills to do so - you can either sub-contract with another VA or refer the client to another VA who have the necessary skills.

What kind of services do you enjoy doing for others? Or what skills do you have? That's something you can think about and make a list then go from there!

Welcome aboard.

Speaking as a bookkeeper, almost ANYTHING can be done virtually via phone, fax, email, snail mail. The real question, as stated above, is what services do you WANT to provide...

I'd say when you have to complete your work at their site. Like those before me have pointed out, almost anything can be done off-site. I like to use the phrase "non-core" because the things I offer do not require me to be in the same space as my client.

Welcome!

Hello and Welcome! I'm an eastcoaster myself (if that's a word!) but don't have any problems with you left siders. Being a VA is pretty tricky it all depends on the relationship from client to client. You'll soon know what you like and don't like and what you may do for one client you may not for the next. Nothing is written in stone. That's the beauty of owning your own business. See you around the boards!
