Default Thanks for this forum!
Hi!

I am Michelle, and I'm just starting my virtual transcription business. I also offer other word processing services as well.

I'm starting out on my own. I've sub-contracted some, and have not been very happy with it. I've been burned a couple of times, and have had to work for pretty low pay.

I must admit to being something of a lurker. I will try and post info about my successes as much as possible. I'm sure I'll ask a few questions as well.

Thank you!

MichelleG

Unfortunately, most of us have 'burn' stories from when we just started out. Think of it as a learning lesson! You will find that the folks here are honest and helpful so I know you will get the support you need here on VAF.

Michelle,

Lily said it best. Hang in there it does get better as you learn the life lessons along the way. Better to learn them now then years into your business. Best of luck to you and glad to see you have come out of the shadows.

Hi Michelle, welcome to the forums

I agree with Lee and Lily - you learned a tough lesson early on with getting burned as a sub. There are clients who may try to do the same thing so be sure to get your contracts in order, require deposits, etc. and treat other VAs with whom you might be working as any other client.

I don't think that all subcontracting situations are at the low end, though that does seem to be the trend. If you're offered rates that don't fulfill your needs as a service provider, then it may be better to pass on the opportunity. If you're busy working with people who don't pay a respectful fee then you're possibly missing out on those who will pay the rates you deserve.

With all that said, what you've experienced makes you a wiser and more prepared business owner so hopefully moving forward you can create more equitable situations.

I'll look forward to chatting with you further on the boards!

As the old saying goes, "You have to burn to learn..."

I take it really positively though because it has helped me to build the boundaries I want. I don't have a problem saying "no" because I don't want to repeat the same negative scenarios.

Good luck with your business!
