Hello and welcome,

You seem well on your way with your concept and ideas but I can understand your reluctance since this is a big step. My first sliver of advice is should you pursue this goal, you need to stop thinking as an employee and start thinking as a business woman.

I began my business by working part time and taking on clients. It was when I moved that I decided to concentrate solely on my business. This may be a good choice for you as well since you are a single mom who pays the bills.

Most importantly, start with a business plan (does not need to be grand) but this will give you the direction and vision to make your decision on whether this is truely what you want.

Have faith in your abilities and confidence in your will. Best of luck with your decision and your business should you choose to pursue.

Hi and welcome to the forums.

I have gone through some of the same issues as you over the last 3 years. Really messy separation/divorce, becoming a lone parent, becoming unemployed.

After a little bit of space and therapy I have started to look upon the whole thing as a new adventure and start to my life.

You are in the a good position to start up your own business. I completely agree that if you can self motivate and you really want to go freelance then this is probably the right time for you. Do as I did and run the unemployment process alongside preparing to start your business, take advantage of all the free help and advice that you can get when you are in this position.

That really is a cool domain name!

Lori what game do you play I am an avid gamer!!!

I just want to say thanks again for all the good luck wishes and anecdotes- they really help.

I feel a little apprehensive since I literally only discovered this route Friday, but nothing has so closely matched my personal life goals so closely. I also have to confess to employer mistrust being a large part of my attraction to this. I am a much better solitary worker than team player, but this was the third time in as many years I was cut due to poor financial planning on the part of the management and I can't afford to trust employers anymore.

So thank you so much, guys!

Hang in there. I haven't felt so positive about anything in a long while. I must say you have embarked on the RIGHT forum. I am still in awe and overwhelmed by the information and the VAs are all so helpful. Welcome.

Re: Really New on Long Island- am I in the right place?
Sorry to hear about your job loss. And I must agree with some of the postings on the thread no one but you can make that decision. This is going to be a lot of work also, but I feel as though I am incorporating all of my 25+ years experience into something for myself. I have the experience so why not utilize it. I too work full time and my goal is to incorporate all of my years experience into this. I must tell you I have learn sooooooooo much form the support given by the fellow VAs on this forum it is over whelming(I find myself saying that a lot laterly). The other thing with all of the cut backs a lot of companies would prefer to contract out work less overhead, benefits, etc. So Hang in there.
