Default Hello I'm new
Hello everybody,

I'm new here at VAF and looking for guidance. Most of my experience has been in the secretarial/clerical field. I would have to say that my expertise is Data Entry. I have done data entry for the last 10 years six of those years have been supervising 2 data entry departments at two major non profits. I have recently relocated and am finding it hard to find permanent work and am working to start my own business in the VA field. I am in the beginning stages and welcome any suggestions.

Thanks and nice being here.

Hi there!

Data entry is pretty vague and most VA's can provide that service.. what other things would you be interesting in offering clients as well? Not saying that having that ability is not important, just saying you want to be able to offer more than that IMO.

Best wishes!

Hi and welcome to the community

I do agree with Melissa that 'data entry' is fairly common - but I don't think that has to stop you from developing a set of services around that specialty. You do have a lot of management experience in that field as well, so that's a major credit.

I'd spend a little time thinking about which industries you see a need for your services and wish to work with, and then fine tune what you have to offer to address their 'pain points'.

Looking forward to chatting with you more on the boards, and wishing you much success as well!

Hello and welcome! I agree with Tess about what industries you see a need in and who you are interested in working with

Thanks everybody for the responses. I will have to take a deeper look at what other services I could offer. Although all of my 20 plus years of services have been doing secretarial clerical work my most recent experience is in the area of DE and Lockbox reconciliation. I would greatly welcome any advice any of you could give. Thanks Tess for the vote of confidence!!

Hello and welcome.

Once you actually sit down and start noting all the tasks you have done and more importantly, would enjoy doing for a business, you might be surprised at how much more you can offer around your specialty of data entry. I have found by brainstorming my ideas on paper (or the laptop) I am able to paint a clearer picture of what I am trying to achieve.

I agree with the others that data entry is vague. However, as a manager of two departments, I’m sure your skills go far beyond what you are just noting on the surface. As managers go beyond the call of duty. I would sit down and examine all the jobs I have had, from the absolute smallest to the highest. Write down every detail, you’ll be amazed. In addition, think of the skills you possess but haven’t used in your job such as business writing and etc…. Lastly, consider the skills you are will to attain through a simple course at your local Community College. Most colleges are offering classes online also. What are some of the jobs you wanted to do but weren’t given an opportunity to shine. So I think you probably have more in you than meets the eye, but you just need a little brainstorming. Blessings!

Thanks again, I receive what each of you have contributed to my stream. I will sit down and brainstorm about the services I am willing to provide. I think a couple courses at my local community college would be a good idea to brush up on the skills I haven't used lately. Your advice is greatly appreciated. So often I undervalue myself so that I don't over promise and under deliver.
