At your next event:

Approach five people and get their card. Find out as much about their business as you can, even if it does not help yours.

Make notes on their card to help jog your memory and if you feel you can refer them as for additional cards to pass along.

Follow-up with a quick not the day after the event with those five people.

Let us know the responses you get.

Nancy's Virtual Office

I will be attending my first Chamber meeting the third Monday of April. I will get 5 business cards and information on people I meet there.

I need to start a data base and the only way to do that is to ask people for their information.

I attended a networking event yesterday that is sponsored by Send Out Cards. The event is open to anyone - not just SendOut people.

I'm finding it easier to give my elevator speech & yes, practice is making it flow better. But also, as I attend more events, I realize that the room is full of people just like me who are trying to grow their business. Now when I stand up in front of a group, I no longer view them as strangers, even if I don't know any of them!

I do have one question. How do you tactfully break away from someone who is monopolizing your time? One man bee-lined for me as soon as the networking session began. He asked me to join a marketing group, another leads group & his own business coaching group. Each of these groups costs $300-$400 to join!

He also wants to barter his biz coaching for my VA services. I'm afraid I was not so tactful as I don't respond well to pushy people.

Anyway, I left with biz cards from four other people, including Mr. Pushy & also including another VA! I'm working on my followup today, although I'm not so sure if I should followup with the pushy guy as I don't want to encourage him. How do you deal with people like this?

When I first joined VAF, I scoffed when established VAs said you should devote an hour a day to marketing. Not anymore!

Lezly,

It is hard to break away from pushy guy as he has an agenda to push his groups. I would excused myself from the conversation with "Oh I see someone over there I must speak with, thank you for the information" and find another fifth person (LOL). This is a down side of face to face meets.

Anyone else have some insight into how you would have handled that.
