Default Your WordPress Website - with 'Dear Christina' [archived VAF Chatroom event]
JoCarole : Hello and welcome to our October Chat Event! I want to thank everyone for taking the time to attend because I know you all have a very busy schedule. It is my pleasure to introduce Christina Nelson, Owner Vital Office Solutions http://www.vitalofficesolutions.com

JoCarole : Vital Office Solutions (VOS) provides professional virtual administrative services, as well as assists businesses with leveraging the power of marketing through WordPress blogs and websites. VOS principal Christina Nelson, a true ‘online soloprenuer’, infuses her Virtual Assistance business with offshoot Websites. In addition to her company Website, Christina created and authors 'Dear Christina' - the “Dear Abby of Wordpress” at: www.christina-nelson.com.

JoCarole : To see a complete list of virtual administrative and Website design services provided by Vital Office Solutions visit http://www.vitalofficesolutions.com. Christina has been in business since 2007. Her area of expertise is WordPress Creation & Maintenance.

JoCarole : The topic for tonight’s Chat will be ‘Why using WordPress to create your site is a great option – basics of creating and maintaining your own site’. Wordpress is a very popular platform to create a blog or Website and unlike other platforms it is free using www.wordpress.org.

JoCarole : Wordpress sites allow the user to control their Website and its updates without the assistance of a costly programmer as is the case for many with HTML sites. Christina states, "Using WordPress as the foundation for your Website means you have unlimited options in design and set-up, as well as plenty of room to expand as needed."

JoCarole : As a special gift, one lucky member in attendance at the live Chat event will receive a complimentary WordPress theme, customized by Christina (not including installation). Winner will be announced at the end of the Chat.

JoCarole : One final note: Christina will be taking Q and A ‘after’ the Chat, so please hold any questions until then. Thank you again for attending and now please welcome Christina Nelson of Vital Office Solutions!

ChristinaVOS : HI everyone and thanks for coming

ChristinaVOS : Please make note of any questions you have so you don't forget to ask them at the end.

ChristinaVOS : Also, any questions asked will be posted on my blog "Dear Christina" www.christina-nelson.com over the next few weeks, with a link back to the questioner's site.

ChristinaVOS : So make them good ones ;-)

virtual writing : Welcome Christina!

ChristinaVOS : I want to make sure we have time to cover as many questions as possible so I'm providing links to all software & sites I mention tonight, as well as detailed instructions on how to manually install WP, in a special pdf file that I will tell you how to get at the end of the chat.

ChristinaVOS : it will also be available when the chat is archived

ChristinaVOS : I’d like to start by saying if you don’t use Wordpress already, you will want to after we are done here. If you do use Wordpress currently, I hope I’m able to enlighten you on some other ways Wordpress can be used for your website.

ChristinaVOS : Everyone Ready?>

ChristinaVOS : I want to make clear that there is Wordpress.com and Wordpress.org. These are not the same thing.

ChristinaVOS : Wordpress.com is a free blogging community like Blogger.

ChristinaVOS : You are provided with a domain name like yourname.wordpress.com that is hosted by wordpress.

ChristinaVOS : You have access to themes and plugins but your choices are very limited and not conducive to a business setting.

ChristinaVOS : Wordpress.org is a blogging software.

ChristinaVOS : You install the software onto your hosting account using your own domain and you have full control over everything.

ChristinaVOS : There are a HUGE # of themes & plug-ins available for use with the software, and more coming everyday, which makes the options endless.

ChristinaVOS : Today we are talking only about Wordpress.org.

ChristinaVOS : With Wordpress you can customize the look of any template and, once you’re done, you only have to use the simple dashboard to update content, add & remove widgets, etc.

ChristinaVOS : The WP dashboard is very user-friendly and, if you need help, the WP forum is a good place to start for answers.

ChristinaVOS : Don't let it scare you though

ChristinaVOS : check out every choice, every button

ChristinaVOS : it's the best way to get comfortable with it

ChristinaVOS : Of course you can always stop by Dear Christina http://christina-nelson.com and submit your question for me to answer or schedule a one-on-one appointment. :-)

ChristinaVOS : Installing WP to your hosting account can be very simple. Most hosts understand the popularity of WP so they offer a quick install of it with their available hosting plans.

ChristinaVOS : You can check your control panel, cpanel or vdeck for something called installcentral or fantastico. That is where you will find the WP quick install if it's offered.

ChristinaVOS : Using the quick install you'll be asked the name of your site/blog, where you want to install it and administrator sign in information. Be sure to write everything down.

ChristinaVOS : During the install process a MySQL database will be set up for you

ChristinaVOS : Don't worry about the details of that

ChristinaVOS : The database is where all of your posts and site set-up are stored

ChristinaVOS : it's all automatic

ChristinaVOS : There have been a couple times I've installed WP only to forget what I used for username and password. At that point I had to uninstall it and go back to the beginning.

ChristinaVOS : So again WRITE YOUR INFORMATION DOWN AS YOU GO

ChristinaVOS : lol

ChristinaVOS : For anyone whose hosting company does not offer the "quickie" way, installation is more involved but by using FTP software, it's basically setting up a database, uploading the files and running the installation script built into WP.

ChristinaVOS : FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol

ChristinaVOS : Basically it's the easiest and quickest way to upload files and folders to your hosting account

ChristinaVOS : instead of doing piece by piece through your cpanel filemanager

ChristinaVOS : Sounds much harder than it is, I promise.

ChristinaVOS : The ebook I'm providing to all chat participants has detailed instructions on how to do it yourself.

ChristinaVOS : Stick around to find out how to get it

ChristinaVOS : Next, I want to point out there are "plugins" and "widgets" to be used in Wordpress. They are not the same thing although a plugin can install a new widget for you to use in your sidebar.

ChristinaVOS : A plugin is a piece of software used to extend the functionality of WordPress.

ChristinaVOS : Such as controlling spam comments

ChristinaVOS : Helping track visitor stats with a service such as Google Analytics

ChristinaVOS : and so many others

ChristinaVOS : A widget is like a plugin, but designed to provide a simple way to arrange the various elements of your sidebar content without having to change any code.

ChristinaVOS : You've all visited blogs I'm sure

ChristinaVOS : You'll see sidebars that show an archive list or category list

ChristinaVOS : each of those is a separate widget

ChristinaVOS : sign up boxes for newsletters or ebooks

ChristinaVOS : that's a widget as well

ChristinaVOS : it's kind of amazing when you actaully start to see how much is out there to extend Wordpress

ChristinaVOS : Now, let’s cover some ways to use WP that you might not know about:

ChristinaVOS : a. Blog – this is the obvious one

ChristinaVOS : don't think I need to explain it

ChristinaVOS : b. Simple website- with a few simple code changes you can make any template look like a website.

ChristinaVOS : All of my sites are built on Wordpress

ChristinaVOS : Just by removing the"posted by" data and any "comments" code your blog starts looking less like a blog.

Default Re: Your WordPress Website [archived VAF Chatroom event]
ChristinaVOS : Little things like that involve digging into the template code but again- much easier than it sounds if you're brave and don't overthink it

ChristinaVOS : c. Membership site- with a few tweaks, plug-ins, and widgets your site can be seen by visitors but your most valuable content can be hidden until they sign up as a member (free or paid)

ChristinaVOS : The simplest way to supply membership is by using turning on the "anyone can subscribe" option in your Wordpress dashboard general settings. Then you'll have to "private" any posts you don't want non-subscribers to see.

ChristinaVOS : Subscribers would have to sign in to get to the good stuff

ChristinaVOS : d. Portfolio- with the right template and a few tweaks you can showcase your portfolio in a really cool way. Sliders & flip pages are some of the formats available.

ChristinaVOS : And not only web.graphic designers or photographers need portfolios

ChristinaVOS : Everyone can benefit from showcasing their talents

ChristinaVOS : Finding a cool way to do it will get your site visitors to stick around a little bit longer

ChristinaVOS : and want to see more

ChristinaVOS : e. Shop Site- again, a few tweaks, plug-ins & widgets can turn your site into an e-commerce site complete with payment options.

ChristinaVOS : It can be integrated with Paypal- Google Checkout and many other payment gateways

ChristinaVOS : There are many plugins available to do this. Be careful when choosing your plugin, make sure it is compatible with the newest version of Wordpress and that it has been updated recently.

ChristinaVOS : don't want to take chances with other people's money

ChristinaVOS : if you can afford it- be sure to get your own SSL certificate if setting up an ecommerce site

ChristinaVOS : SSL basically let's your visitors know there financial data will not be compromised

ChristinaVOS : f. Aggregator- this is a little more complex to set-up but you can grab feeds from all over the internet to post onto your site. Alltop.com is an example of this, it’s not built on Wordpress but it could be.

ChristinaVOS : For those who don't understand what an aggregator is:

ChristinaVOS : If you've ever subscribed to a blog using RSS

ChristinaVOS : you just grabbed an aggregated feed

ChristinaVOS : A simple way to try this is to have a template made up of all widgets. Then you would just add many "RSS" widgets to it and pull feeds from all over.

ChristinaVOS : Not sure if there is such a template...

ChristinaVOS : hmmm may have just given myself a project. LOL.

ChristinaVOS : g. Appointment Scheduling: for online and brick & mortar businesses, you can set up your site with a calendar, services list & staff list so customers/clients can sign up & prepay for a block of your time.

ChristinaVOS : I’ve recently implemented such a service on Dear Christina so I’ve been having fun testing it out.

ChristinaVOS : There are so many other ways but those give you an idea of just how versatile WP is.

ChristinaVOS : Using WP as the basis for your website means you have unlimited options in design & set-up, as well as plenty of room to expand as needed.

ChristinaVOS : Now, those of you who use Wordpress already are probably thinking "I know all this, why the heck am I still reading?"

ChristinaVOS : Well for you, here are some tips on ways to make WP work better for you.

ChristinaVOS : Let’s start with the basic plug-ins you should have on your site:

ChristinaVOS : These are all listed in the PDF with links to everything

ChristinaVOS : oogle XML Sitemaps Generator – generates a XML-Sitemap compliant sitemap of your Wordpress blog.

ChristinaVOS : That would be Google

ChristinaVOS : sorry

ChristinaVOS : BAsically you need to submit an XML sitemap to google so that it can crawl your site more efficiently

ChristinaVOS : This plugin will set up the sitemap for you

ChristinaVOS : Takes care of the hard work

ChristinaVOS : All in One SEO Pack - Automatic Search Engine Optimization (SEO) out of the box for your Wordpress blog.

ChristinaVOS : That is my favorite

ChristinaVOS : No more worrying about if each page and post of my site is optimized- the plugin does most of the work for me

ChristinaVOS : WordPress Contact Form with Spam Protection - self-explanatory

ChristinaVOS : Wordpress Database Backup – creates backups of your core Wordpress tables as well as other tables of your choice in the same database.

ChristinaVOS : VERY IMPORTANT to have a backup system in place

ChristinaVOS : You never know when a glitch could come up and you'd lose all your hard work

ChristinaVOS : WordPress Google Analytics - This plug-in allows you to use the powerful Google Analytics to track your Wordpress stats

ChristinaVOS : Twitter Tools - It allows you to pull your tweets into your blog (as posts and digests) and create new tweets on blog posts.

ChristinaVOS : Twitter tools is a cool little gadget

ChristinaVOS : Everyone wants their new blog posts tweeted but sometimes you pre-write a few posts

ChristinaVOS : and set them to post at specific times

ChristinaVOS : (another cool feature of wordpress)

ChristinaVOS : But if you forget they are posting you may not remember to tweet them as well

ChristinaVOS : Once you remember, the post is already old and visitors will wonder why youu're tweeting the old stuff

ChristinaVOS : Sociable - adds social media buttons to your posts. Your readers will be able to share your posts with the rest of the world on sites such as twitter, delicious, digg, etc.

ChristinaVOS : Now those should be on EVRY worpdress based site not matter what is designed to be

ChristinaVOS : Bloggers need some special additional plugins

ChristinaVOS : Subscribe to Comments - allows commenters on your blog to check a box before commenting and get e-mail notification of further comments.

ChristinaVOS : Makes them more apt to visit again

ChristinaVOS : they get an email saying" hey someone else chimed in" and will click to go see what the other person said

ChristinaVOS : promotes ongoing discussion

ChristinaVOS : dofollow -lets you remove the evil nofollow attribute from your comments. This means the comment will provide a link back to the commenter's site. Good for their SEO which means they are more likely to return.

ChristinaVOS : Hopefully you are commenting on sites that provide the same courtesy.

ChristinaVOS : Aksimet – make comment and trackback spam a non-issue.

ChristinaVOS : Akismet blocks teh spam before it shows up in your comments

ChristinaVOS : a wonderful little gadget I must say

ChristinaVOS : I just checked my Akismet report before hopping into this chat

ChristinaVOS : It blocked 67 spam comments from being seen on my blog in the last week

ChristinaVOS : and the last for bloggers

ChristinaVOS : FlickrRSS - allows you to display Flickr photos on your weblog.

ChristinaVOS : Let me say this, if it is in your budget, hire someone who knows Wordpress to customize your site so you never have to touch code.

ChristinaVOS : A professional will be able to customize your site just the way YOU want it. Saving you the headache of trying to figure it out yourself. Also, signing up for monthly maintenance from that same professional is the best defense against future problems.

ChristinaVOS : In most cases, the WP pro hop can right into your code and be out in 5-10 minutes with the changes you asked for completed. A good WP professional will enter your blog’s backend once a month and install any updates required, make sure everything is working as expected and will advise you of anything that might require some major adjustments.

ChristinaVOS : Well, that's everything in a nutshell.

ChristinaVOS : To get the special free pdf visit http://vitalofficesolutions.com/vaf-chat password: iwantwordpress

ChristinaVOS : Now, let's get some questions.

ValentineVA : I have a domain name that I purchased from GoDaddy, how do I transfer that to Wordpress?

ChristinaVOS : The domain from godaddy has nothing to do with wordpress- you need to install WP on your hosting account

ChristinaVOS : if you only have the domain you'll need to buy hosting

cbranch : Can you transfer if you have Microsoft Office

ChristinaVOS : cbranch- haven't dealt with ms LIVE for a while but not usually

virtual writing : Great stuff, Christina! Do you recommend any other stats plugins besides Google Analytics?

Your Virtual Wizard : Christina, I use TweetSuite and Twitter Pro Widget and neither one allow for a post to go out from my WP blog with a shortened url. It goes out with just the title of the post, which people can't click on.

ChristinaVOS : Janine- switch to twittertools- it include bit.ly shortener

joywilder : wonderful chat! any plug ins you can add to a simple website?

ChristinaVOS : joy the plugins listed are your basic ones

AbleAssist : I downloaded Wordpress 2.8 (I think) last night from Wordpress.org, but I got a whole bunch of folders and really didn't know what to do next with them.

ChristinaVOS : Able- you need to upload them to your hosting account-check with your host to see if they offer quick install first- then you can just delete what you downloaded

AbleAssist : My hosting account is with GoDaddy.

virtual writing : AbleAssist -If your host doesn't have the quick install, find the ReadMe file amongst those downloaded from WP

ChristinaVOS : able they have a quick install- look for Fantastico on your cpanel and click it

cbranch : So I think when my year is up with MS Live then I will find a new host which they have assured me I can do and then move over to WP.

ChristinaVOS : cbranch- I'll tell you something just to warn you

ChristinaVOS : I had MS live as my first site

ChristinaVOS : when i decided to move the domain it shut my site down for almost a week

cbranch : oh no

Default Re: Your WordPress Website [archived VAF Chatroom event]
ChristinaVOS : till everything transferred

ChristinaVOS : they may have fixed the problem by now but read EVERYTHING about the process

ChristinaVOS : call someone if you have to to get a straight answer

cbranch : Thanks I will they sent me a long email with instructions

Stephany : there is a free ftp plugin for firefox called fireftp

ChristinaVOS : thanks stephany- I explain how to use two other FTP programs in the pdf

ChristinaVOS : don't forget to pick it up

Crystal Clear Business Sol : Can you get a plugin for affiliate marketing?

ChristinaVOS : Crystal- there are so many plugins you'd have to search around but I will research it a bit and reply on Dear Christina later

Crystal Clear Business Sol : Thank you

Your Virtual Wizard : Thanks. One more...is there a facebook plugin? I couldn't find one.

ChristinaVOS : Janine- you mean to post blog posts to facebook?

Your Virtual Wizard : yes and show activity on the blog from news feeds for example. I installed the fb widget but nothing from WP to FB that I could find.

ChristinaVOS : Janine- I actually haven't seen one yet or at least one that actually worked

ChristinaVOS : will have to look around

ChristinaVOS : Oh: helpful hint when looking for plugins- don't just rely on the built in search in your dashboard

ChristinaVOS : Try a Google search - not all are listed on WP

ChristinaVOS : c'mon I know you all have more questions

ChristinaVOS : There is nothing off limits or unimportant

Essential Office Solutions : when you choose a template and want to change it, how hard is it?

ChristinaVOS : some are quite easy through the options provided in the dashboard

ChristinaVOS : depends on the template

ChristinaVOS : others you'll need an ftp program to transfer files back and fortj

micarter : Is there one host that seems to work better with WP than others that you have found?

ChristinaVOS : I have used Startlogic for all of my hosting - never a problem

ChristinaVOS : others have good luck with hostgator and godaddy

TargetStars : What is the best plug in to use if I wanted to add a newsletter subscriber box?

ChristinaVOS : Targetstars I use the contact form plugin and follow the instruction for placing in a text widget in your sidebar but it does not supply an autoresponder - for that you need aweber or 1shoppingcart

Valley Virtual Assistance : Christina, you mentioned an SEO plug-in. Does that mean we don't have to enter separate meta tags?

ChristinaVOS : Valley, regarding seo - you set your keywords, etc in the main settings of the plugin

ChristinaVOS : the plugin grabs keywords for each post based on the content - you also have the option at the bottom of post and pages to customize each

virtual writing : Christina - I've heard some plugins can crash your site. Is this true?

ChristinaVOS : Virtual writing- yes plugins can crash your site. Always make sure it is compatible with the newest version of wordpress and google it for reviews from other users

virtual writing : ...so only use ones that are updated and popular?

ChristinaVOS : Virtual writing- YES

Caliber Virtual Services : Good idea.

martsgirl : would you know of a plug-in for squeeze pages? I'm creating a wordpress theme using artisteer

ChristinaVOS : Martsgirl I don't use squeeze pages so that's one I'll have to research and get back to you

Essential Office Solutions : you hear alot about security of your site - what can you do in WP to secure it from hackers.

ChristinaVOS : Essential- hackers are deterred by always keeping your site and plugins updated

AbleAssist : Christina, you're right, after learning a little about Wordpress there's no other way to go! It is very versatile! Can't wait to get my site in Wordpress.

ChristinaVOS : the excerpt box doesn't have to be used- some themes need you to use it to make your pages line up correctly

ChristinaVOS : There are many different programs listed inFantastico

ChristinaVOS : not all are for blogging and some have a large learning curve

ChristinaVOS : Joomla is an advanced Wordpress that I've dabbled in for instance

ChristinaVOS : but I wouldn't recommend it for beginners

Your Virtual Wizard : please explain the difference between categories and tags. Occassionally my cats and tags are the same words.

ChristinaVOS : Categories and tags are sorta the same - but you can sort your blog by categories and tags help with search engines

ChristinaVOS : They may be the same [words] and that's ok

ChristinaVOS : all more keywords for google, etc to find you

ChristinaVOS : you don't have to use tags

ChristinaVOS : on my company site I don't use either

Your Virtual Wizard : Really, no tags? I didn't know.

Your Virtual Wizard : And the trackback links line on the same post page. Is this the url I want to trackback to? Create a post>add the trackback url and then publish...nothing in the post or in the title, is that the way to do it properly?

ChristinaVOS : on Dear Christina I only use categories

Your Virtual Wizard : So I shouldn't sweat the tags

ChristinaVOS : Janine- Tess actually asnwerd this on the forum recently I think- she did a great job of explaining- better than I could

ChristinaVOS : Don't sweat the tags- good for SEO i believe but have to doublecheck with the SEO expert Tess about that

virtual writing : Yeah, don't foget the tags entirely ...

Tess : Here is the thread on VAF re: trackbacks... How to trackback, step by step instructions? [it's actually a reference to an outside source that explains clearly]

virtual writing : I've misplaced URL for pdf ...

ChristinaVOS : http://vitalofficesolutions.com/vaf-chat password: iwantwordpress

Essential Office Solutions : when you post a pic/graphic which of the fields the name or caption is the one shown when you hover?

ChristinaVOS : OK Cindy now you're testing my memory hang on

ChristinaVOS : The title is what shows when you hover and acts as alt tag

ChristinaVOS : title is hover text

ChristinaVOS : caption is alt tag

ChristinaVOS : any more?

ChristinaVOS : Valley & everyone else- be sure to stop by Dear Christina http://christina-nelson.com if you think of anything after the chat

Your Virtual Wizard : An aesthetic question...when selecting a theme, is there a color preference that is best for blogs?

ChristinaVOS : Janine- color is personal preference i feel

ChristinaVOS : Thanks tess

ChristinaVOS : you want to choose colors that are easy on the eyes though

ChristinaVOS : PLEASE don't put white text on a full black background

ChristinaVOS : it hurts to read

Crystal Clear Business Sol : I've seen whole web sites done on WP. Is there a recommended max number of pages that it can handle?

ChristinaVOS : Crystal- it can handle as many pages as you can throw at it

ChristinaVOS : If you want me to catch a WP question that you post on the forum here- just be sure to put Wordpress in the subject- i always open those

Tess : Christina, I'd love to know what your thoughts are on using all of the themes and plugins that require a link back to the source... in my understanding that can really hinder solid SEO work - giving all those links space on your site or blog. Do you have any thoughts on that?

ChristinaVOS : Tess- for themes I feel it's a small price to pay for use of someone's hard work- usually they only ask for a link in the footer so I don't think it's intrusvie

ChristinaVOS : if they ask for mor than that run away and find another theme

ChristinaVOS : plugins I'm split on that

ChristinaVOS : only because there isn't a really easy way to lshow a link without it looking out of place

Tess : Do many of the designers offer a branding-free option for a small fee [as some other apps do] or is that generally not an option?

ChristinaVOS : but there is hard work in those as well

Tess : And I do agree - designers should get their due credit to be sure...

ChristinaVOS : The better themes want a link

ChristinaVOS : there are many out there that don't require a link

Your Virtual Wizard : Christina, just pulled the pdf...fantastic!!! Is that feature...the pdf part of the membership feature you mentioned?

ChristinaVOS : actually no Janine I just password protected that one page but it's along the same idea

Your Virtual Wizard : So that feature is not a plugin? Very, very nice. Smooth-looking.

ChristinaVOS : micarter try right clicking on the book image and save as

ChristinaVOS : janine- right

Your Virtual Wizard : This is intriguing...so you just password protected a page?

ChristinaVOS : right janine- right above publish you'll see public

Your Virtual Wizard : Wow! Really neat.

ChristinaVOS : janine- click for options under public

Your Virtual Wizard : Last question...so the password box is just an image you created?

ChristinaVOS : no janine- it's built into wp

cbranch : It is wonderful to be in the company of such awesome professional VAs.

Essential Office Solutions : Thank you JoCarole and Christina!

TargetStars : Thanks again for the chat. I really appreciate it Awesome job!

ChristinaVOS : remember- Once they post the archive I'll be adding all of your questions to Dear christina www.christina-nelson.com and linking back to your sites.

Will this be offered again? I missed this because I was not yet a member. I would love to participate if it will be offered again, since I am considering using Wordpress to transfer my current site.

Thanks.

Hey Ivette,
I can't speak for the forums but I would be happy to do another chat. I have some other projects in the works that will help you with Wordpress so stay tuned for those to be announced.
