Default Wordpress Question - Customizing Themes
I am using Wordpress 2.8.1 to create my website. After doing some research, I am implementing the parent/child theme concept.

How do you change the header and background? Is that all in the CSS file? If I change the header, it will change the parent template. So whenever the parent theme is upgraded, I would have to apply my changes again. Is that correct?

Thanks for any advice,
Mimi

the primary place you will change the theme is in the CSS. Yes, whenever the theme is upgraded or changed, it sometimes will go back to the original CSS that the sheet came with. Before you do any changes always...always, always back up your site......

Thanks Rebecca! I ended up using the Thesis theme and it has a lot of good features and the custom CSS is separated from the rest of the files. When the theme is upgraded, I do not have to lose my custom CSS changes, at least that is what is supposed to happen.

Pamela,

Are you using any wordpress themes that are free? I found out that if the person who designed the theme does not support it when Wordpress is upgraded, then you are responsible for fixing your site. Most designers in the Wordpress themes directory usually try to test their theme on the latest Wordpress version but I've seen a couple that didn't support any upgrades anymore (especially in the plugins directory).

With each upgrade, I wanted to make sure I didn't have to apply all of my customizations again for each upgrade. I chose a theme where the customization files are separate from the main theme files.

Hope that helps,
Mimi

Ok, thanks Mimi...that does help. I will look at the theme I chose and see if the customization files are separate.

Thanks again for the information.
