Default Website Building...Beyond Confused
Allow me to preface this with a disclaimer about my absolute, abject and complete lack of any sort of techie knowledge or experience....there are no depths to the lack of my cluelessness with this stuff....just so you know....

Anyway, so after much deliberation and research, I finally decided on Hostgator for my domain registration and hosting.

So I get into my cPanel thingy and do the tutorial to get my web disk happening, all fine. That's done, feeling very pleased with myself, I come back to the cPanel expecting to find the "press here and start building your website" button.....but, to my horror, there was none.

There are options at the top "best WordPress themes" and "amazing website templates" and down the side there is "Quickinstall WordPress for your site" and a bit further down under Website Builders there's "Site Builder" and "Trendy Website Builder" (I think I'll give that one a miss, just quietly)....but which one should I use??? I've been reading that Site Builder sites don't do well with Google and that WordPress is only really for blogging and/or for people that actually have a clue about any of this....I am so confused by that - doesn't everyone use WordPress for their business websites??? Do I have to be a guru? It seems that you really do need to have at least a modicum of technical knowledge to navigate this maze that is website development and I'm feeling very despondent (again) right now

I guess in short (which this wasn't) my question is: Should I use WordPress and is that a completely different ball game than using Site Builder? Which is better? And EASIER?

Thanks for listening........

Keri

Hi Keri,

I feel your overwhelm when it comes to the amount of choices out there. The choices your facing now is what type of website/platform to choose. In the past I had a website I built using a template website builder with my webhost. It worked fine for me, but I found as I wanted to be able to add or change features it was a case of perpetual upgrading to another package. Which of course resulted in a larger monthly fee.

I kept hearing more about WordPress, so I ventured into building a WordPress website with another domain name that I wasn't using and have never looked back. I then transferred my live domain names to my new host, chose the WordPress platform and built my current website on that.

I have no regrets on that decision whatsoever! I think that building websites does take a certain level of tech skills, but it's relative. What one person perceives as "easy peasy" can be another person's nightmare. So it's difficult to assess DIY for another.

If I can be of any help, let me know. Take a look at my website http://www.lmfva.com/wordpress/

Linda

Thanks so much Linda and thanks Christina - I tried to PM you back but don't have enough posts.

I'm in Australia so that would probably be a bit hard if there were phone calls involved??

Thank you so much for the offer though, you're very sweet

No phone calls needed- we can do it all by email if needed.

We can always connect on skype about 7pm my time & it'll be 9:00 am for you. Just let me know and we'll figure it out.

That would be fab Christina

I have tomorrow off (so it would be Tuesday morning for me and Monday night for you) because it is a public holiday here, but as I work full time, the next day I could do 9am would be my Saturday morning and your Friday night, I guess.

Do either of those work?

Thanks again SO much.

Cheers

Keri
