Default Web Design Training?
Hey!

I posted about being laid off a week ago- I sorely would like to take some intensive classes in Web Design but it's kind of out of my budget as of now.

Does anyone know if this kinda thing is a waste of money nowadays? Are there resources to teach these things just as thoroughly or is taking a class a better route?

These are the two I was looking at:
http://www.brooklyn.liu.edu/bbut05/it/webdesign.html
http://www.labor.state.ny.us/etp/OFF...PKID=250000372

Thanks in advance!

To my fellow New Yorker

Lots of freebies you can do.
You Tube is great for that stuff
Adobe.com allows you to download a 30 day trial of all there stuff. I recommend Dreamweaver and Photoshop
Your Local Library
I would investigate classes the Department of Labor give...you are drawing unemployement they may offer those classes free.

How that is a good start? BTW where is Copiague?

Thanks- the DoL is actually what gave me the idea. I went crazy looking at the site for hours but it's very convoluted and it seems like the only break you get financially is longer unemployment benefits.

Copiague is on the south shore of LI, about 1 hour outside the city. Where are you?

Thanks, BTW!

Upstate.... Syracuse area....

I really like YouTube. It gives you that visual and you can go back and replay or reference it at anytime.

Another thing you could do is download a free web site template (like from that CSS web site, I will have to look up that link again for you) and study the CSS file. That will give you a great reference plus something to monkey around with.

The CSS master collection is truly awesome Adobe are amazing, the free trial is great but it is expensive to continue with.

I worked my way up from playing around with Front Page and Expressions and also right clicking on web pages to look at their source code. I combined this with some dummies books and you tube/internet training videos.

I don't normally have any issues with validating my web pages so I guess the answer is you don't really need a class if you can motivate yourself you study independently and as long as you always remember to be methodical in your approach.

Hi

I've found a couple of free online training courses in web setup and design. They're very basic but you may find them helpful:

http://sofia.fhda.edu/gallery/html/l.../lesson01.html

http://www.e-learningcenter.com/freecourses.htm

I'm slowly working my way through these. They may be what you're looking for.

Maybe you will find these sites helpful:

http://www.w3schools.com/

http://oreilly.com/

http://www.devguru.com/

http://www.tizag.com/

And don't forget your local library! Mine has shelves & shelves of 'how to' computer books. With a computer & a book, you can learn a lot on your own.

www.about.com has tons of courses in everything. There are a lot of different titles to choose from in the Web site category
HP Learning is free and has different courses in Web site training.
Lynda.com is $25/month but you have access to all their courses.
howstuffworks.com is another free site with videos
ehow.com is free and has videos also

I also have some other ones (too many to mention), if you need them just PM me and I will be glad to send them over. There is so much stuff out there its really information overkill I finally got my site up but it took a long time. I researched a host provider and domain provider until I found just what I was looking for and they are both awesome! Good Luck with it!

Hello, I too needed some help on web design and a good place to start for me was in my area the local high schools have classes in the evenings called community schools for adults and they teach all kinds of classes for about $75 for 6 weeks. I don't know where you live but check out the community colleges for continuing education courses in your area. And the online web tutorials mention here can be very helpful. I still have some tricks of the web trade to learn (like flash) but I am working on it now. Good luck to you.

I did my own but it took many many months. But that's just me
Actually it only took a long time because I worked on it for only a small part of each day. But I spent a lot of time on my content and researching first. When that part was done the rest went pretty smoothly and I found it to be a lot of fun. I didnt have to know html (I know a little)...but eventually I would like to put up my own. But right now my time is really limited. As long as I have a Web presence that is the most important thing to me.

I started out just messing around in Dreamweaver, and later took a course through www.ed2go.com, which works with local community colleges. For $55 I advanced to an intermediate level. Online, well-structured, well-supported - I highly recommend it.

I've renovated my site many times (like 5 or 6 times) in just over a year - ha! html is fun!

Hello!

I did pretty much most of my own site. Someone suggested making my fonts all the same. Since I didn't know HTML and really didn't want to spend the money to have someone do this for me I went to the Internet and typed in "Learn HTML" the first link that popped up was www.w3schools.com. I pasted the code from my page in to their editor and was able to play around with it until I got it right. They give examples on everything. I made a note of the links mentioned in this thread and will check them out. I want to learn how to change the color on my navigation buttons. Still haven't figured that out yet.

Have a great day!
Beth

I also did my own site as we were lucky enough to already have Dreamweaver. It took me an intensive weekend of following tutorials to get a site up and then I took a while to tweak it to what I liked. There is an awesome set on this forum for HTML learning which will be a great help to you. I just Googled 'web designing free' and 'dreamweaver tutorial free' etc and it's amazing what's out there. I think I will be checking out some of these links though because it's time to get serious. Do you know a student or are you going to become one because then you can get the software you want cheaper. If you enrol in a design course, depending on the institution, they might even provide access to software if you're lucky. A lot of universities do that in Australia. Good luck!

Cheers,
Marie
