Really interested in redoing my site in Wordpress
But I don't even know where to start.
I really like the look of many of the WP sites I've seen, and keep hearing that they're relatively easy to build and maintain.
I created my own website in Yahoo's Site Builder - doesn't require HTML knowledge as it converts everything for you.
I have VERY minimal HTML knowledge.....but so far I've been able to figure out enough to get by when it's necessary.
Have been looking all over for REAL tutorials, but I'm mainly finding blogs from people saying why someone SHOULD have a WP website!! I haven't even really found any good books on the subject (other than using for blogs).
I need step-by-step instructions, which are understood by people who do not have a degree in web design! Do any of you have any resources, personal experiences?
Thanks!!!!

Re: Really interested in redoing my site in Wordpress
Hi there
You can visit the following 2 links for info on wp vs html Establish Internet Presence witha blogsite and html or blogsite.
There are several books on wordpress to help you put the site together but no matter how easy it is you need to have knowledge of html. There is a great section on the forums to train you on html.

Re: Really interested in redoing my site in Wordpress
I've been contemplating this as well. I think it will meet my needs and save me the cost of the website I have now. I have found a student who is willing to design and integrate my blog and everything. I just need to get on it. Its time for administrative partners to rebrand.

Re: Really interested in redoing my site in Wordpress
Although having a Wordpress site is somewhat easier, knowledge of HTML, CSS, and even some php would be very helpful if you want to customize a template to your liking. If you don't customize the template you like the features of, you end up having a site design that others have, so it isn't unique to you.
My advice is to find someone that has knowledge of the skills you are lacking to help you end up with a unique site.
Here's a site tut that may help with HTML (there is also a link for intermediate HTML): http://htmldog.com/guides/htmlbeginner/
And from the same site for CSS (and links for intermediate and advanced CSS): http://htmldog.com/guides/cssbeginner/
Have fun!

What!?? I love the look of your site... Especially for the field you're in (marketing). Is it expensive to maintain?

That is so true, I just had my website redone in Wordpress by another VA, Cyndi. I didn't have a clue on how to do it. She did the everything, I am now adding contents to my pages and adding pages. I read wordpress pages and also I reviewed what Cyndi did carefully and I have mirrored her actions. I am not a website designer or a graphic designer, but if you show me what to do I can mirror it.
Check out my site, I chose the design and she worked with it. http://www.uniquely40.com

Re: Really interested in redoing my site in Wordpress
To get an idea of the variety of templates out there, I suggest you google "Wordpress templates" or "Wordpress CMS"- imo, the paid versions are better set up and more professional looking (in a lot of cases) but that does not mean you have to go with a paid template.
Headway, Thesis - are two very customizable WP themes that can be managed by someone with limited html/css knowledge. I'm not sure about headway, but I know that Thesis has great support and tutorials.
The one I use is from Elegant Themes, and there are a few choices from his collection.
For me, the best thing about WP is that I can change the look or functionality quickly and easily with the installation of a plugin. It is that easy sometimes.

Re: Really interested in redoing my site in Wordpress
If you have a webhost like GoDaddy, that offers auto install of applications - you can install wordpress without a problem. Then you can purchase a 'theme' or have one designed/customized specifically for your site. I would suggest hiring someone with the design and wordpress skills to set up your theme and design, because even the 'free' themes will require some 'tweaking' to work with your site, adding your logo, etc. There is a great program out there called 'artisteer' I use that to design client themes. If you are wanting to do it all on your own I suggest checking it out. It will save you tons of headaches and time! The cost is minimal compared to what you get.
Good Luck!
