Hi,

I have a WordPress blog and site. I use Askimet to capture spam and have my settings set to allow me to monitor the comments before they are posted.

I must receive 50-75 spammy comments in my email for me to monitor. I'm glad it doesn't get posted on my sites but I wonder, is this normal?

I end up deleting each one but it can be time consuming.

Any light you can shed would be appreciated.

If it just started happening, make sure Akismet is updated.
There are plugins (no names are coming to me at the moment) so you can add captcha to your comment area. That may help.

One more question...how does disqus conquer spam? Does it require posters to have a Disqus account before posting?

Nope they don't need an account- If they have one it will grab their preferred image though- also adds captcha to comment area
Handles things quite nicely actually.
It seems to flag spam comments better than akismet and you never have to see them.

Did you see that Askimet now asks for payment for commercial use on WP? I read around the 'net and it always did charge for commercial use but it moved its payment policy forward at the sign-up.

It can get confusing because some clients use their blogs for personal and commercial. There is a charge for commercial but not personal.

I know I am 'off thread' but I thought I'd run that by you for your comments.

I have a Disqus account I use when I post other people's blogs but hadn't thought to use on my own blog.

Didn't know that about akismet. I have a feeling they aren't going to check every blog to make sure they are all personal. :-)

Paying for a plugin like akismet, isn't something I would do.

Discqus, THAT I would pay for if I had to. It has been a godsend on "Dear Christina".

Another odd thing...

WP is promoted as free but when one loads WP, Askimet comes with it. So when Askimet asks for payment, it contradicts the 'free' promotion of WP.

Yes, I noticed that about Akismet recently, and was quite disappointed. In your estimation, Christina, is Disqus actually a good substitute? Or should we be looking for another free Akismet imitation? Any suggestions?

I really like Discqus and it's free too. I think it's better than a substitute, personally.

I tried a few other free ones and wasn't impressed.
