I have little knowledge of Wordpress. I have my site up and I was wondering how do I create a new site, I dont like mine, without having it published right away? I know that you can do this, but I am unsure on how to do it and where to go to do it. Any help or direction would be great!

I'm far from a WordPress expert, but if you're already using WordPress you can choose a theme you like, upload it to your domain and then select the new theme from your WP admin panel.

As far as creating a new site without publishing it right away you'd need to create a new installation of WP on your domain and upload the new theme files to that directory instead.

Are you familiar with how to work on your site via FTP? Understanding where you're starting from will help me, and whoever else jumps in, help you get where you need to go.

Thank you. I have no idea how to work on my site via FTP. I log in via the dashboard and work on it from there. I did not know that I can create a new install of WP on my domain. I am using Godaddy for hosting.

If you have the basic Wordpress install, then you should be able to use different themes and tailor it to your liking. Can you give us a link to your site so we can see what things you want to change?

There isn't really a way to customize a theme while it's live without having anything go live when you update it.

However, I would suggest that you install a plugin called Maintenance Mode to put up a "Please check back" page instead of your site for however long you need to. You just deactivate it when you are done working on the site. This way you can make it inaccessible to visitors for any period of time while you change one thing or ten things, without them seeing what you are working on.

You can always do a second install of WP on another area of your site.

Make a subdomain (you can get instructions for this from your host-it's pretty easy) and install WP there(be sure to choose to hide it from search engines under settings->privacy- no one will be able to see it unless you give out the URL)- play around with it, redesign, go crazy and when you are happy, give me a holler and I'll help you get it moved over to your main site

Thanks everyone, Christina I have been using Bitnami on my computer to build my site. I have been watching some online training videos on how to use wordpress. I might just give you a holler if I do need your help, From what I understand I need to build a child theme so that when I update my theme my changes that I have made will stick.

I'm a little late to this thread but there is a WordPress plugin that will let you install and work on customizing a new theme while keeping your current theme the visible one on your site. It's called "Theme Test Drive".
