Default Headway Theme Header Tags
Everyone says that for SEO you need to make sure you don't have too many header tags. Strange that for as long as I've worked with Headway I didn't think about this until this week when I was designing a new site.

I realized that I have no clue how h1...h6 header tags are handled...or where they are in Headway. I would assume that page titles are h1...but then I think most people would delete the "themes" page titles in favor of creating their own - or just not having one. i.e. You don't want your home page to have a "Home" at the top of it. It's on your nav bar.

Anyway...i digressed. So...today I was coding a leaf with some html and I put the title of a leaf on my home page in h1 tags. It did nothing. No change. Therefore, for some reason it would seem that I can't designate my own h1 header tags? If anyone has some in-depth information on this where you can shed a little light...I'd be very, very, very grateful.

Thanks!

Hi Pam,
Headway was built to specifically give you an edge in the SEO department, in fact, Michael Martine, aka Remarkablogger, is one of the people who is involved in the creation process at Headway for just that reason. Since over use of the H1 tag can hurt rather than help your SEO, Headway reserves it to being used once per page (which is what Google wants to see). Headway keeps you from shooting yourself in the foot with H1 tags by only allowing you to add H2 and beyond through your own formatting.
You still want to be careful with the amount of times you insert the H2 as well though, it shouldn't be overly used for formatting but used as a guidepost for important stuff, for example a subtitle.
The really cool thing with Headway is that you can change the appearance of your H3 and H4 tags so that they are bigger and grab reader attention while still not raising a red flag SEO wise.

Hi Tina -

Thanks...it helps to know there is only one, but exactly "what" handles the h1? If it is the page title then that is actually the title of a content leaf...correct? Some pages don't warrant use of content leaf, such as home page. So then that would mean that by deleting the content leaf - or even if you don't do that if you hide page title - either way you would not have an h1 on page.

Definitely need an h1 on each page...so need to determine how to manipulate that - I guess. So to sum up. If h1 is the page title - which is actually a title of the content leaf - and I don't want a content leaf - then how do get an h1 on my page? If h1 is NOT the page title, then what is the h1...so I can add my keywords to it.

Thanks Tina!!! Appreciate your help as always.

Hi Pam,
Sorry it's taken so long to get back to this thread, it's been a busy week already.
This is what the Headway guru's say about the placement of H1 tags:
Headway takes care of the H1 on most pages.
On a standard home page (index) the tagline is in H1 due to the fact that there are more likely keywords and descriptive words there and the post titles are H2
On single post pages the post title is H1.

I believe on single pages, the page title itself would be H1. (but I could be wrong, I need to check more closely) Of course in Headway you can use the SEO section in the page editor to create an SEO strong page title even if you want a shorter title for navigation purposes.
Let me know if you need more info and I'll pick some brains.
