Default Address Bar Icon Code (favicon)
Does anyone know the code to get your icon to appear in the internet address bar at the top of the page? You know how when you are on Yahoo's page, the little"Y" is there right before the address? More and more site have these little icons and I'd love to know how to do that, if anyone knows what the code is. Thanks!!

I just researched this a few days ago. You have to create a version of your icon that is 16 x 16 pxl. Save it as favicon.ico and upload it to the root (www.yourwebsite.com/favicon.ico) of your website. Your web browser should read it and place it in front of your address. You may have to delete your browsing history before you can see it (at least I had to for mine).

There is another option that you can use where I think you put it in your META tags, but I am not sure how to do it because I didn't use this method. Do a search for favicon and you should be able to find it. Hope this helps.

That's called a 'favicon' and is a very small image file along with a bit of code - check here for info on how to add one to your own site

If you want to follow current web/coding standards, use this tutorial from the W3C site.

Thanks so much! I couldn't even find the right search criteria to look for it. I must've searched for everything I could think of and couldn't come up with the right words to find it.

So I can just open my logo in Photoshop, shrink it and save it with that extension and then save it right in the root directory and it should work? Seems so simple. I was expecting lines and lines of code.

Thanks for the quick reply! I appreciate it. Have a great day!

Well....technically, yes - but there are many browsers that won't recognize your favicon file for what it is without some code to help them out - if you want to be sure it shows up for all users then you'll want to use a bit of code. IE is actually one of the browsers that has a hard time reading a plain image file as a favicon (without code).

I did this this morning using this site. It took my logo png file and produced the favicon, and an animated gif and gave me a zip with the files and instructions with the code to add to the website.
