Good information. I am going to the library today to get the book Gorilla Marketing. I have heard of it before but never read it. I really need to get up and going and at least one client in the next few days.

I would love to rekindle this thread to know, now that some time has passed, whether the postcards and flyers that were mentioned in this thread worked out for each of you!

I'd like to know how this worked for others as well. I'm considering targeting smaller brick and mortar businesses in my area and considering flyers to connect with them.

I think flyers can work but like all marketing techniques, flyers target certain markets or individuals. I've done the flyer thing and had absolutely no success with it. However that being said and even though I toss out flyers myself, now and then I come across a flyer that I keep.

In my opinion it's a hit-or-miss thing. But everything is always worth a try!

I've been in business for almost 2 months now. Last week I received a phone call from my first customer. I asked how she found me after I completed a project for her. She saw my flyer at the mall.

I plan to send out a letter to potential client with my brochure and business card included. I am also going to send out postcards. I know you have to keep sending marketing info to the potential client and it takes time to get your name out there. But I think letters and cards are worth doing.

In my experience, postcards just get thrown away.

I think it depends on a number of things like age, demographic and what kind of people live where you are.

I'm reluctant to send bulk digital flyers - as someone who has received them from others I have very quickly dismissed them. That might just be me and others might have had success with them?

WOW! I am really glad I read this thread before I spent my time creating a cute little flyer. I do have some postcards that I'm putting in local thrift stores and small businesses in my area. I also am creating an informational brochure that I plan to mass mail to my target audience and once I get my newsletter together, I am going to take it to our local Innovation Depot-they assist small businesses and to our local women's small business association.

I'm using my friends as well-I will be sending out a monthly e-blast about my business asking them to forward to their friends and their friends. I am using the mentality that I will never know who's hands/inbox my information may end up in.

I plan to advertise in our local newspapers and I am buying an ad in my daughter's yearbook (she's a high school senior). I plan to be a PTA Newsletter Sponsor ($5) at my son's elementary school. By doing this I will have a small add on the front page of the newsletter.

I too am wary of flyers as I just bin the ones that come through our door (now I feel guilty). We have 2 magazines that circulate in our area and I think I'll try those first of all, I think general conversation and word of mouth is by far the best, but I appreciate that is slow and time is money! I'll be keeping an eye on this thread as would love to know how you all got on.

Wendy,

Joining your Chamber of Commerce is a very good idea. You have to pay to be a member, but they let you leave marketing materials in their office, and they list your business on their website. You also get invites to all the Chamber mixers and events. It is worth the low membership price.

I've tried putting flyers on grocery store bulletin boards and never got a response. But you might be able to hand out flyers on cars instead.

It all depends on if you are trying to reach B2B or B2C clients. If it's B2B, it's going to be quite difficult, but B2C should be much easier.

You can also deliver flyers door to door as well, which would help to get B2C clients.

Yeah, as the above member said, if it is B2C, it should be fairly easy. I think if you visit those places where you think people (interested in buying your product/service will visit), you can hand them flyer directly, which will be a better option. Make it designed beautifully, so it makes them read the content.

I will wait a little bit and then send another one....etc. You can send out a ton of flyers and not get one response, so make sure to send to a more targeted area. This way, they do receive it and you are spreading the word!! Don't get discouraged because you may not get a call right away, but maybe a few months down the line...if you know what I mean.

I agree with Robin...lots of work it takes and determination!! It's a consistent thing. You have to keep at it.

Good luck!
I'm glad you mentioned mailings. I've read multiple threads wondering if this approach worked successfully.

Have your mailings been to residential PCs or commercial? If commercial, how do you deal with companies that have administrative support on site and may view your mailing as a threat rather than additional support thus not passing it on?

Your assistance is appreciated! Thanks :-D
