I agree with most of the posts on here. In researching the freelance sites, it seems as though the majority of jobs posted are for low bidders. What I intend on doing is evaluating those within my local area. From there, I can find small businesses, direct sales consultants, etc. that may need my help.

Hi!

The site I like the most is PeoplePerHour.com

On the whole they feel much more professional than many of the other site that have already been mentioned - though I did see that they are also being infiltrated with the $3 per hour brigade!!

It's well worth checking these out!

Since I am just getting things under my belt, I have used elance and guru. Most of the other named sites I had not heard of. I tried doing this about a year ago and I didn't have the drive and determination that I do now, so I have reverted back to elance and guru again and I have landed a job on both sites within the last month that I've really put my mind to VA work. However, I do see how all the replies see these sites and hope that I will not have to rely on them for very long. Just enough to get me on my feet.

I have registered with some of those sites like elance, freelancer, but have not done any work. The bids seem to be off shore, and very low.
I have yet to hear of one that really works well and is worthwhile.

I am checking out a site that is currently in beta - www.LiveWork.com. Not sure of the affiliation but it is being promoted on the www.LiveOps.com site. Not a lot of projects but it may be worth getting in "on the ground floor".

HTH!

Thanks for all the advice about these freelance sites. I didn't sign up for odesk or elance when I saw how low the bids were. How does anyone get chosen from all the other VAs at the site? If the client is just looking at the price - they will get what they pay for.

I gained a bit of VA experience by using sites such as these but not alot of money. The clients are looking for cheap slave labor. Cut your teeth on them but don't depend on them for a decent income.

About 6 months ago, I set up profiles on ODesk and Elance. I bid on several jobs, did several interviews and won one project. I worked about 3 days for the client. She wanted to nickel and dime me to death over phone time we spent brainstorming.

As previously written, there are way too many third world countries bidding on these sites.
Every now and again, I take a look at the site may bid on a project here and there but no bites.
