Exactly... I don't have a favorite because I don't use these sites. Though I will admit that when I was first starting out [very early days] I won a few projects via GetaFreelancer. Not ideal situations though due to the incredibly low rate most people expect on bidding sites.

That is good to know, Tess, and thank you for your input on this! I do not know that I will pursue this avenue. I was thinking about it as a starting place but not sure now. My time might be more valuably spent working on my business.
Another big concern is that if you do acquire a client from a freelance job site and you bid low on the original job, they will most likely expect to continue paying the low rate. It's difficult to raise your fees after the fact.
Using sites like Elance or Odesk has not worked well for me. I receive better outcomes utilizing the free sites: Craiglist, AbsoluteWrite, etc. I am not familiar with Guru.com.
I got my first major client from guru. BUT I honestly can't recommend any of these sites and I've been all over. As you stated - just spend the time working on your business to gain quality clients who want quality work.
I'm in the process of starting my VA business. I've gotten three jobs on HireMyMom.com. None of them are high paying, however, it does give me experience in being a "VA" which helps me better plan my business.

I have not had success either with the freelance sites. That market is saturated and you are competing with people who offer their services for ridiculously low rates.
I signed up with guru, odesk, getafreelancer, elance, etc., but I figured out I would rather spend my time marketing my business and get paid an actual living wage, than bid and bid and bid at low dollar amounts...seemed like a total waste of my time. I don't frequent those sites any longer.
