Default Use of clip art or avatars in marketing materials
Just curious, what are the general opinions regarding the use of clip art images or an avatar in websites, logos, brochures, business cards, etc.? Currently, my logo consists of my business name and some clip art, but I was thinking of adding a clip art image or cartoon graphic as a main focal point.

Thanks,
Anita

Hi Anita,
As someone who uses a cartoon graphic as part of my logo, I'll say that it depends on a few things. Who is your target market and how are they going to perceive your use of a cartoon? Can you use one without it looking childish or too whimsical? It took me months of browsing stock image sites before I found an image that I felt still looked business-like and then I did some tweaking to the image to make it work for me.
And if you do find something that works for you, be sure your using the image legally. Even when purchasing the image on a stock photo site there are still rules as to how you can use that image.
It can work, I get wonderful compliments from other businesses on the 'Clerical Advantage Girl' often, but it took time, effort and a lot of thinking to get the right balance to be sure I was taken seriously in the business world.

Thank you Tina, I actually did find a "cartoon" image that I like which is similar to what I've seen on other websites. I agree that I will need to confirm as to the uses of the image prior to purchasing, and if purchased I will definitely be tweaking it to my preferences. Still on the fence on this.

Thanks,
Anita

Anita,

Logonerds.com makes cartoon images which are personalized. They call it the character mascot design and there is a portfolio you can browse for ideas. http://www.logonerds.com/portfolio/c..._mascot_design

Good luck!

Janine

Anita, great question and glad I found the information here. Less questions I have to ask when I already see my questions with answers. Very helpful.
