Default Right in front of me the whole time
So,

I have 1 client that I gained purely by luck and a craigslist ad. So I am here on my full time gig thinking how do I gain more.

I get an email from a contractor done in powerpoint and obviously done by her and then like magic it hit me..

You work for a government contractor, you live right outside of Washington, DC you KNOW the in's and outs of contracting from an administrative aspect. WHY not focus on selling to small start up government contractors!

I can sell my assistance with the forms, searching for opportunities, mass marketing etc.

I have ideas constantly running around in my head so I am asking for input..
Do you think this can work?

I think this could DEFINITELY work. Trying to decipher Fedbizopps will you a migraine!!!
I worked AS a contractor and subcontractor; I also have subcontractor (drafting NDAs, RFPs, checking backgrounds, you name it) experience. And with all the government agencies/contractors here, there's got to be opportunities abound. I have also been thinking about how to use this background in my business and I keeping tweaking and reviewing my services list (which is a problem, because I was supposed to be finished with my website a week ago.)

The beauty of what we do is that we work virtually. You really can work for anyone from anywhere. But when I first thought about starting a business the best advice I received was "LOOK NO FURTHER THAN YOUR BACKYARD. I GUARANTEE YOU THERE'S A NEED FOR SOMETHING YOU KNOW HOW TO DO."

(And I hope I get to meet you in a few days at the VA/DC/MD get together).

Caroline I couldn't agree more. There's a wealth of opportunity in your own backyard if you look for it.

It will totally work. The best opportunities are normally the closets ones to you, or within your contact circle. So start the ball rolling by simply making a few amendments to that PDF you received and send it back to the contractor as a sample. I'm sure that would be a sure way to introduce your service and start your portfolio and client list growing.

Have fun.

It can definitely work. Being from the mortgage servicing industry I was able to tweak areas where I knew help was needed and offer services. One was making a repository for RFP responses. I set up templates and information for the sales team to "pull" properly formatted information for the proposals. I used my knowledge to address overall industry standards for the team.

This saved my client tons of time as every piece was modeled to specific criteria and standard so that additional approval was not needed from the division each time an RFP was to be answered.

That particular client was to only be a 3-month project but it has turned into a retainer account and I am contacted to give their responses a once over to be sure all criteria is met.

Working from your "own backyard" is the best way to build your client list for that service as well as many others. This particular client now comes to me for other "short-term" tasks that need addressed.

Thanks so much ladies!

I am for sure going to try to rock this.

I started sending out my "encouragement" emails last week and I will continue today. Hopefully someone will bite!
