Responding to freelance job openings?
I'm preparing a cover letter in response to a freelance proofreader job I found on craigslist, but I have a few questions from those who've been there, done that. First off, it's a freelance position, so do I really need to get into how I can save them money by not being an employee (by saving on payroll expenses, income taxes, etc)? Since they're actively seeking a freelancer, they're not planning on paying employee expenses, right? I figured I could mention something about being fully equipped to work from my own office, which would save them money on office equipment, overhead, supplies, etc. Is that enough? Or too much?
Also, they asked for a resume proving that I have at least two years of proofreading experience in the Advertising industry. I do have this experience, which I explained in detail in my cover letter, but I'm reluctant to send a resume as I'm not an employee, I'm a contractor. Should I just explain that since I don't work as an employee, I don't have a resume? I know I've read here and there something about creating a bio to send to potential clients, so I may want to offer to send them something like that (if I can find the info on what to include in my bio!)
I feel comfortable in my cover letter that I've been sending to potential clients who are seeking employees but haven't run across someone seeking a freelancer before, so it left me a bit stumped. Any suggestions?

Re: Responding to freelance job openings?
Hi Tammi
I'm of the firm belief that when someone places a job listing with specific specs requested it's best to provide the info they're askng for. You could always toss in a little sentence like, "As a freelancer I don't often have occaision to forward my resume, but have included it at your request..." - something like that that sets the bar for you but still satisfies what it is they want.
The other thing you could do is go the bio route, just as you mentioned - and just include any pertinent info from your resume without it being formatted as such. A professional bio should just summarize your experience, talents and skills, any awards, volunteer work, highlight published works, and touch on philosophy...someone else may have a different take on that though!
And yes I think your approach (ie - no need to pitch the benefits, just jump straight into process and potentials!) is perfect - best of luck and keep us posted on how it goes for you!!

Re: Responding to freelance job openings?
Thanks, Tess! I like your idea of saying that I don't normally send my resume but am making an exception for them; maybe it'll make them feel special. I feel like this position would be a great fit for my skills, experience, and personality, all of which I tried to let shine through in my cover letter. I'll put the finishing touches on it tonight, then I have to update my resume (ugh) and get it sent off. Thanks for the well wishes; I'll definitely keep you posted!
