I think personal resources and you bringing in your own work by marketing is the best choice. I have tried Elance and not only do you have to bid to get a project you have to bid lower that anyone else. My time and work is more much valuable than selling myself for less.

Good luck!

I agree . . . any suggestions on Marketing to get the right clients? I'm still fairly new and marketing myself.

Thanks a lot for your reply ... Yep true ... It's a lot discouraging as the rates are way too low ... almost always.

Regard

Hi there, marketing yourself is one of the best ways to get clients that will pay what you're worth. I have gone the same route as you with Elance and GAF etc and now they are just one of the marketing tools that I use. I keep these profiles updated with my contact details and list of services offered in the portfolio sections. Because they are active I get inquiries through them or jobs emailed that might be of interest for me.

I have bid on projects and gotten clients and out of those clients more than half are now clients that I work with regularly. Having a website that is being picked up by a search engine is also one way of attracting clients.

As for specific sites that has reliable clients I would say this forum is a good one.

Good luck.

Hi! I am a VA in Argentina. I´ve tried Elance and Odesk, and even for us (1 dollar is worth almost 4 Argentine pesos), the bids are way too low.

Althea, how do get reliable clients from this site? Please, I would love to know!!

I just joined the local Chamber of Commerce, and they suggested I go to the local Employment Center to look for job postings. The thinking was that I should send a letter to anyone looking for part-time office work, telling them about my VA services, what I can offer, and how it would be less expensive for them. Has anyone done this? Has it worked?

My initial thinking is that it would be better to start local rather than Elance or Craigslist, but I could be completely wrong.

Sharon,
I never thought of doing that; going to the local employment center and sending out letters. I like that idea... I may try that in my area. Right now I am attending college and have 7 more classes to finish to get 2 degrees in office admin and legal. Learning quickbooks now.
Thanks for that idea, hope you don't mind my trying it.

Great idea, I've been keeping a look out in the local papers for similar ads but hadn't thought of the jobcentre! Thanks.
