Thank you very much for the links! There are several I have not heard of before that I will try for marketing.

I was hoping to give Craigslist a shot as well and target a few cities on the east coast. Unfortunately it seems due to the volume of spammers they get you are not allowed to post to more than one city/area. Is that true? I'm certainly not going to abuse it but do they really delete or ban you if you post your services to more than one area?

Thanks for the sites! There are many sites listed online but a couple of these were new to me.

I am new to VA and trying to find the best way to get started. I have a wide range of skills, but am feeling overwhelmed about where to start? Many of the great resources on this site I can't access yet because of the posting rule. Can anyone point me to some answers? Thank you!

I too was on Elance. Well, I still am, but I have begun to look elsewhere. It seems that everyone on there is a 'team' or a company and does work for 10+ bidders, which makes them able to charge so little for the work.

I have to agree with Walkerva and VBC (and I'm sure many others) - you do get what you pay for - and then end up paying more to have it done correctly! =)

I also shy away from Craigslist. So many bad apples. Every now and again I give it a look see, but never seem to be able to find anything.

I'll have to check out the others on the list, though! They seem pretty credible! =) Thanks for the share!

Remember though, don't undercut yourself for the sake of getting the contract because you're all worth more than that.
It's totally free to join and if i remember right they offer you 5 bids a day. You can choose your categories in which you'll list your services. There are few VA's listed on the site so it's a great opportunity.

Hope this has been of some help.

Thanks, It's good to get a source that has actually worked for someone. Has anyone had luck in getting legit work from an online site?

I just registered with peopleperhour.com
Having looked at a job, it seems that everyone has put a bid in for the job, but the client isn't answering the questions. Is this normal for all the bidding sites, or am I just unlucky? They all want to know how long the project is and how many hours required. Doesn't seem like an unreasonable question to me.

I have posted to the small biz on craigslist only to be seriously spammed by people telling me I don't have to look any farther for a job - they want me to take a look at their link to whatever thing they are selling...
However I have had great luck with other stuff on there and love CL for selling my stuff.
So I suppose I'll try it again and post my VA business.. Maybe this time though, I'll report the spammers back to CL.?

Oh my gosh! this is so not fair!

You should realise that the standard/cost of living in emerging nations aren't as high as in developed countries. When I eventually return to my home country in Africa, my skills - oral and written, will not become any less wonderful than they are now. I, however, would charge much less than I am now (in Britain), and my real income (what I can buy with that) will be HUGE, as in HUGE.

Your friend getting a crap VA was bad luck. There are crap Virtual Assistants everywhere - pretending to know more than they do. I believe such practices have been mentioned on this Forum often. puh-lea-se.

I wonder how much extra work the people who hire $3/hr admin help make for themselves.
