Hi I'm trying to find someone who is located in MN to answer a few questions about have a business in MN. I am specifically wondering if we need to charge sales tax for our VA services?? I know I can call an accountant but just throwing this out there to see if there is someone I can network with in my state as I'm just getting started!!!

Well!!!! Hello from Minnesota!

My goodness, you just posted and I JUST found it!

My husband and I have an LLC (Limited Liability Company). We have operated our business this way since 2003 and it has worked out great. (Before that we were independent - big mistake - huge taxes.) We renew our Articles of Organizations every year (approx. $35) and tax season is a breeze!

No, you do not have to pay sales tax in our state for selling a service. If however, you are selling a product you do have to pay sales tax. A good book that we bought when setting up our business is called, A Guide To Starting A Business In Minnesota.

I just got back from having taxes done and am so worried about going forward with what appears to be a 45% tax I'll be paying on my business (25% federal, 15% self employment and ~5% state for income tax). Yikes! If I change from sole Proprietor to LLC will that help? I feel like I must be missing something!! I read some other posts about people paying about 30% . . .

I appreciate any feedback and direction . . . I was a bit discouraged after my tax appointment this morning.
