I called the secretary of state's office here in Ohio to check for name availability. Then went to the ODOV (Ohio Dept of Dev), registered, input information about my business, and was presented with a packet of forms that I could download and print to fill out. All the forms I need to get started are in the packet. My only dilemma is trying to decide between Trade name registration or Fictitious name registration for my sole proprietorship. Yes, I decided to do SP because it is cheaper and after reading on the forums, I understand I can upgrade to LLC once my business becomes more solvent. Suggestions on which to choose?

I'm not practiced at this kind of thing, and it does vary from state to state what is required, but as I understand it your trade name is your official business name so I believe that is the one you need to register.

I would recommend calling your State's Corporations Division (or similar offices) to double check.
