Question Should I get an EIN?
I'm looking to start doing some work subcontracting for another business. I'm mulling over setting up a DBA, but the issue of EIN came up as well. If I'm not incorporated, or an LLC, or really anything other than a guy with a DBA...do I need to get an EIN?

Would that mean that I need to file my own personal taxes separate from the taxes related to my EIN's activity? (I'm in Indiana, FWIW.)

Any thoughts? Thanks!

Yes you should get an EIN even if you are a DBA. It will attach with your SSN so that when giving out this information to you contractors or clients you do not have to give them your SSN. As for taxes, you would still file with your personal taxes.

I agree with Lee. You should never give your SSN out, use the EIN number. When (not if!) you business grows enough to hire employees, you will have to have the EIN number anyway. Good luck!

Thanks for the quick replies! Would it be a hassle to go to an LLC later on if I already have gotten an EID now? Or, does the EIN just stay the same?

EIN stays the same as it is tied to YOUR name, not your businesses. When you apply, you will apply under your own name.

I'm going to file my business certificate with the county next week. Can I apply for my EIN now or should I wait until I file the certificate?

I've snagged my EIN! It was totally painless.

FYI, I found some additional info about EINs that I thought was interesting as well. It looks like if I create an LLC I will end up with two EINs...
