Hello all just a quick question. I would like to go ahead and register my company name, request my tax i.d. and things of that nature. Can anyone suggest the agency they chose to use for this purpose. Thanks!

Welcome to VAF. If you use the search button here at the top you will note that there are many threads about registering a company name. The entire VAF Business Development category reviews from soup to nuts what is needed to register a business, apply for the EIN, etc. I recommend that you take a moment to search through.

Your profile doesn't indicate what state you are from but generally most businesses are registered with their state's Department of Labor or Commerce. You might want to Google 'your state name - how to register a business'. Chances are you will be taken to your state's site giving instructions on registration.

The Small Business Administration has a great website on registering a name http://www.sba.gov/content/register-...ness-dba-name/

Your local government may also want you to register with the county or the city in which you live. So I would check your local government website as well.

You can request the TAX ID through the IRS. Here is the IRS' site for small business owners and can answer your questions about obtaining an EIN http://www.irs.gov/businesses/small/index.html

You may also want to copyright your company name but first check TESS (Trademark Electronic Search System) to make sure no one has registered that name in your state. Here is the copyright government site http://copyright.gov/help/faq/

I used LegalZoom the first time I registered my business - it was more expensive but made sure all was up to par. Since then we've moved to another state and I handled the closing and reopening of our business in the new state by myself. It was a lot of paperwork but not an unbearable burden.

I'd recommend starting with your Secretary of State's website. Generally all of the forms and information you need will be found there. Often times you'll be able to search your desired company name (at least for your state) there as well.

You'll also want to check your country clerk and your cities administrative offices to see if you are required to file/register/pay taxes to them as well. Just run a quick Google search to find their sites and contact info.
