Default Liability Insurance - Canada
Hi - I would be interested to hear from other VA's in Canada who have liability insurance.

Specifically I am now a company of two - about to expand to three - and make use of casual sub-contractors. This is making it difficult to get both commercial liaibility and errors and ommissions insurance. I'm told because of the sheer quantity of services I offer it makes insurance companies nervous - so they are only will to ensure me if I have employees or no sub-contractors or if each of my sub-contractors has her own insurance (which they don't).

If you've managed to get insurance or have any tips on how I could best approach it - I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks!

Do you need commercial liability? I always thought that commercial liability was only necessary if you have in house employees and/or clients coming to your office who might just trip over the cat. Looking at your list of services I would suspect the only thing you need E&O for is bookkeeping, but only an insurance agent could advise you for sure.

I'd be interested to hear other's thoughts on this one.

Hi Lynne

Thanks for your response - the insurance agents I've spoken to say I have to have Commercial liability which seems strange to me too. I think part of it has to do with me going to their offices/homes - so apprently if I fall on their coffee table or step on their cat they could sue me.

I never thought about asking for E&O liability insurance for just the one service - I will call my insurance broker back and suggest that.

Amanda, if you'd like a second opinion give Jeff Comiskey a call. I've met him a number of times and he seems a decent kind of guy. He's in my area but there's a toll free number 1-866-943-4549.

I am in Nova Scotia, and was just wondering in general what type of insurance Canadian VA's carry? Thanks!

I was wondering how "Its Your Time" made out with the insurance arrangements. I am located in Ontario, and set up business as a sole proprietorship. This was something I was interested in finding out more details on a few months ago.

Any new insight on Errors and Omissions Insurance would be appreciated.

Hi All,

I ended up using a gentleman named Terry Carlson - his email is tcarlson@wotherspoonins.com . He was great - very helpful - seemed to actually understand what I needed and wasn't freaked out by the wide spectrum of services I offer - which seemed to be the holdup with everyone else. Also - he found me insurance for over $1000 less than anyone else I spoke with.

However, the biggest feature of Errors and Ommissions portion of the insurance was that it didn't require all of my subcontractors to carry their own policy - which was a stipulation with all the other carriers that other agents had found me.

To sum - I got commercial liability and errors and ommissions. Good Luck!

Hello,
I was wondering if you would be willing to share the actual cost associated with carrying Errors & Omission insurance for yourself and your two employees.

Also - Does this policy cover the work of your subcontractors, or does the policy cover you because you review their work before submitting it to your client.

Thank you so much!

Hi Leazell
The policy cost about $1400 for both commercial and errors and omissions combined. It covers all work done by It's Your Time.

I've give Terry the heads up that I've posted his email so he'd be happy to answer any specifics.
